Cannot open .eml files - HELP!!

Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Using Windows Live Mail email client.

I have always saved any important emails to a folder in 'Documents' and have previously had no issues opening them. Now in Windows 7, however, there doesn't appear to be any permanent file association and they will not open. In[b:363f8hpl] Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Associations [/b:363f8hpl]there is no listing for .eml.

I had a look around the net and the most common solution was to go to [b:363f8hpl]Control Panel>Programs & Features[/b:363f8hpl], double click on [b:363f8hpl]Windows Live Essentials[/b:363f8hpl] and select the [b:363f8hpl]Repair[/b:363f8hpl] option. This does work but it does not stick. Several days later and the situation reverts, the emails again cannot be opened.

Anyone have a permanent solution for this annoyance??

TIA.....Jim

Jim,

Right click on the .eml and select Open With. Navigate to the wlmail program. I think it's Program Files(x86)Windows Livemailwlmail.exe. Be sure the "Make this the default program..." is checked.

Have you considered moving your mail to Outlook 2010? I can think of quite a few reasons to do so.

Thanks Dave, but I did all that already...... doesn't make any difference. Still will not open saved emails and the icon associated with the files remains blank.

I reset all defaults, as per the norm too....that didn't make any difference either.

I should have said all that in my original post.....sorry. Although, you [i:bnifq5ox]really[/i:bnifq5ox] should have guessed I would have enough nous to have tried that already!!!

As for Outlook...NO!!!!! I do not like Outlook at all, it is a takeover merchant!

I really like the Windows mail client, right through from OE to WLM and do not wish to change. Just gotta sort out this minor annoyance.

Cheers mate.....Jim

Didn't you say that about 64-bit OS'es?

You could try opening WLM and dragging the file onto the icon in the taskbar. It's a round-a-bout way, but it might work.

Ouch, that was a bit below the belt!!

Very clever idea. That should pin them permanently to the Jump List....you're not just a pretty face then!

They are working at the moment coz I did the ol' Repair Windows Live Essentials thing just this morning. I'll wait until the rotten thing breaks again and give it a try...should work in theory.

Thanks mate....Jim

All in fun, Jim!

Or you could just fire up Outlook. You'll be surprised at how similar, yet more useful, it is.
