After reading Jim's article on DISM and SFC I tried to run the DISM command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
But it failed to complete. Gets to 62.3%, stays there, then shows an error message that it can't find the restore files.
I have tried many variations on this command and Jim's suggestion of FixWin11, but nothing seems to work.
I have downloaded a fresh version of W11, found the index number for the version I have and pointed it there, but still no luck.
Any suggestions welcome.
Would a repair install of W11 solve this?
Hey Ken,
Frankly, a repair install (or in-place upgrade) is probably your best best. In my experience, with this type of issue, you can try umpteen possible solutions all to no avail and end up performing an in-place upgrade anyway.
So, you'll probably save a lot of time and effort going straight to the in-place upgrade route.
An in-place upgrade is non-destructive. That is, all installed programs and data are retained and, because it will replace all system files, is almost certain to fix the problem.
Just out of interest, why were you running the DISM command in the first place?

Hi Jim;
I was running it on your advise 🙂
After reading your article, I thought I'd give it a try and see what the fuss was about.
Little did I know........
I'm on the fence with a repair install. I've tried the DISM command on three different computers here and none of them worked. I don't know if my internet connection or firewall is blocking the download of online data for this or not, but it seems that my whole network won't let me run this.
Everything is working, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Thanks for your reply.
You must have misunderstood Ken. My advice was to run the sfc /scannow command regularly, not the DISM > RestoreHealth command. That should only be run if/when experiencing issues.
Sorry if I failed to make that clear.
Anyway, seeing how you are not experiencing any issues, I agree, there is no need to perform an in-place upgrade.
It's strange though that the DISM command won't run successfully on any of your three PCs, that's definitely indicative of a common cause, such as the Internet connection. Or maybe a security software that's common to all three machines.
