Hi Marc and Jim.
Will either of you two be writing an article on W10 about expectation and or disappointments with the W10TP? It might help give some poor bloke a little insight on what to expect before this thing rolls out on July 29.

W10TP Start Menu
After using the W10 start menu and W8.1 start page I just can't see if anything has been gained. I have even expanded the start menu out to full size and just use the windows x menu. I can usually pin a shortcut to the task bar or to the desktop and not even use the start menu. W10 has even taken the action center flag and removed it from the notification area, which I utilize quite often in W7 and W8.1. Now one has a notification icon that pops out a side bar menu that has some buttons to click on to get to where you want.

I actually prefer the full-screen Start menu in Windows 8.1 Daniel. It's not something I visit very often anyway.

As far as I am concerned, Microsoft has pandered to the moaners by resurrecting a half-baked Start Menu popup which has practically zero added value, and in fact (in my opinion) is nowhere near as intuitive or helpful as the existing Start Screen.

Jim, did you keep your reserve issue of W10? I uninstalled the update on both my W7 and W8.1 machines and then after running WU I hid the update.
Are You, Marc and I the only ones on DCT that have any input about W10 or is everyone just blindly accepting what MS is offering? I'm not saying I will not run W10 but it will be what I purchase and not as a upgrade to either W7 or W8.1. W10 has a long way to go before it becomes the go to OS of my choice.

No way Daniel, definitely not. I'll play a wait and see game.

Unfortunately, I will need to install Windows 10 for work at some time just so I can write about it and answer questions about it.

My main machine, running Win7 and Win8.1 in dual boot, is getting on for 6 years old now and I'm looking at buying a new machine. When that happens, I'll keep the two operating system as is on my older machine and install Windows 10 on the new one, that way I'll have all three current OSs covered.

As a former XP fan who only went the route of 8.1 because I could still use the old fashioned Start Menu via third party utilities, I welcome another free upgrade to Windows 10. It's just a new operating system which one can customize. I do not use the tiles or apps. I'd like to think I'm not blinded by a free upgrade, since I've not read any real reasons which I can understand as to why not to upgrade, other than opinions. Also find it odd that only a small handful of users are taking part in this conversation, Mindblower!

As a W10TP user I will tell you the transition even from W8.1 will be noticeable. I am not a big fan of the W8.1 Start Page but right now I find it easier to use than the W10 Start Menu. I am sure their will be third party apps that will help in customizing the W10 Start menu but I like to setup and customize a OS with what it has before I turn to third party apps.

dandl, if you've never used third party utilities like Classic Start Menu, you're not seeing the entire picture of what these utilities go. As I keep saying, the operating system is just that. It's the engine which can be installed into different cars (or you customize the car your way). Suggest you give it a try and report your findings, Mindblower!

I'm finding that boot time for the Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 8 is much longer than Windows 7, albeit on a standard hard drive (not SSD).
About five minutes actually.
This is really odd, even though I've tweaked the startup in msconfig.

I have been trying to post this for you. My W10 startup time from when I pushed the start button and until W10 Windows X was 81 seconds on a 500GB Seagate Sata drive.

Dandl, I noticed in your post that you would not want to overwrite you win 7 or 8.1. I have a few customers that feel the same way so I have been using their installation disk to put the OS in a new partition and then using that one to do the upgrade.

Just a thought.

Marc,

5 minutes!! There's something wrong there mate.

Win10 on my old machine running older hardware and installed on HDD boots up so quickly - only a matter of 20 to 30 seconds or so - far quicker than Win7 on the same machine.

I agree sure would like to see his startup programs. W10 loads in about 81 seconds on my machine and that is with a triple boot option.
