Hey Charlie,

Sorry for the delay in getting back. We've experienced a weather event here with severe storms, thunder, lightening, torrential rain, all through the weekend so all my machines have been mostly switched off.

I download a Win10 HOME ISO and installed in a VM. Applied the registry edit and it did NOT work. So, it is certainly looking like a difference between Home and Pro.

I apologize for the misleading information. I know for a fact that this registry edit used to work in Win10 Home but I guess an update since must have changed that situation.

If you are still interested in taking full control of Windows Updates I can recommend a terrific portable freeware: https://www.carifred.com/wau_manager/

I have tested this software and it works great.

Cheers... Jim

Downloaded the WAU-Manager to my Dell W10 Home laptop, will see how this works.
Have this pinned to taskbar for easy access, I will update Windows through this app.

The WAU Manager has added some entries to the AU registry key.

Looks like the WAU Manager has stopped WU in services and has put it in manual.

Thanks Jim,

I am still very keen to be in control of Windows Update as I have limited Data during the day from 06:00 to 24:00 and then some extra data from 00.01 to 06:00 which I never use as I am usually asleep at that time. I want to schedule the updates for then.
So I will install WAU Manager and see how it goes.

Best regards
Charlie

I have an article in the pipeline on how to setup and use WAU Manager, it will probably be published some time next week.

In the meantime; when you first run the tool make sure to enable the option to "Disable the built-in Windows Automatic Updates and use only WAU Manager".

Just an update on WAU Manager running on Win 10 Home
Using WAU and setting the option "Disable the built-in Windows Automatic Updates and use only WAU Manager" as described, see Fig 1, I found that it does not work on my PC either. With the latest updates posted this week they were still downloaded without requiring my permission.
On starting my PC I checked Windows Update after a short while and the Malicious Software removal tool update had already been downloaded without permission and was pending install.
There was a problem with the Cumulative update which may have been caused by WAU but it seems to me from the wording that it had started downloading but had a problem installing See Fig 2
I clicked on Retry and then got the result in Fig 3

So I am still disappointed that I don't have control of the Updates

Hey Charlie,

That is very disappointing indeed. I cannot explain why it isn't working for you, I personally know of three experienced computer users who are running WAU Manager successfully.

Let's check the status of your related services. Please open the Start menu and type services. Then click on Services in the results. Check the status of the following services:

Background Intelligent Transfer service
Windows Update

Are these two services set to "Manual"? If not, what are they set to?

I am using it and the only disadvantage I have found on a WIn 10 Pro machine is that even if you 'HIDE' an unwanted update like the additional updates that windows update offers you, they do not stay hidden and are a constant annoyance. Also, its controls on when to update os flawed. I have it set for 3:30 every afternoon and it also tuns about 20 minutes after boot every morning. 20 minutes is well beyond the completed boot sequence. I like it but until they can get the bugs worked out it is just as easy to use what M$ provides.

Hi Esarhaddon,

Running 20 minutes after boot is a good thing because it does not interfere with the boot process.
Why it runs at that time is another matter. It should only run at the time you have it scheduled for.
Hidden updates always work on my Windows 10 Pro system so I can't speak about that bug.
The author of this utility seems to be receptive to contacts so may you should try asking him what he has to say about it?
We would be interested in knowing his response.
Thank you

Hi Jim,
I must apologise for not replying to this post sooner. I can only plead old age and decrepitude.

Both those services you mentioned are set to manual.
I have found that for Jan, Feb and March Windows updated as soon as it could after the update was issued even though the WAU Manager was active and correctly configured.
I can only think that it is an anomaly of Windows Home as I have the same problem on my Desktop PC as well as my laptop. I have now removed WAU from my PC as it does not work for me.

To recap my original problem: I want to stop Windows 10 from updating from 06:00 to 24:00 when I have limited data on LTE internet and only update after midnight when I have some free data.
I have achieved this by turning off updates in Settings for 7 days on the second Monday of the month. I then use a portable program "WakeUpOnStandby" to set the PC to wake up after midnight sometime after the Tuesday update is issued and the PC will then update before 6am if I have activated Updates in the Settings again This works for me.

As an aside I tried to wake up the PC using Task Scheduler but after going through the whole procedure when I want to save the task, I get a message that I am not authorised to do so. Another Home anomaly I think.

Regards
Charlie
