Yes, very good!!!! Now, are you dual booting with Windows? Why did you choose
Mint Mate?

No, I'm not dual-booting, I only have LM Mate running on this particular machine.

I chose MATE because of preference based on previous editions of various distros. The differences are minimal, at least to/for me, it was just a matter of taste and prior experiences.

How many partitions are you using for Mint? Is the drive MBR or GPT? If you have the drive space you
install Ubuntu,Zorin,Lubuntu or MX Linux along with Mint and have another OS to play with.

When I installed LM I selected all of the default settings, so I don't believe that I have any HDD partitions, regardless of MBR or GPT.

I am however intrigued by the idea of installing a second distro, just for kicks. How would a newbie go about doing that?

I will try to help, if you are serious about this? Install gparted and take a screenshot of your drive layout.

And, for full disclosure, I said that I had LMDE installed because I assumed it meant Linux Mint Desktop Edition. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, I'm not sure, but you know what I'm running now. I will head out to install gparted and see if I can get you a screenshot.

Thanks for your continued help.

Sorry about the reply but I am trying to finish a Gentoo install. I see what you have and that really is in need
of change. That is what happens when you select Linux default install. I mostly always use the "something else"
unless it is on an old PC with one HDD.
I am in the middle of compiling firefox for Gentoo, and that is the drive we are going to use as a guide. It
only has MBR partition table, so I can only have four partitions, but it will do. I believe your drive has GPT
partition table, not really needed, if you can disable secure boot in the machine's bios.
Looking forward to helping you. Daniel.

Hi Josey
Linux-Mint-and-Gentoo.pngImage Enlarger

I have been trying for a year now learning Gentoo and how to install. I have chosen the Mate DE, simply
because it runs just like Mint Mate, but Gentoo does not make it easy to get to this point. I would not
suggest this on any Linux Newbie, but if one wants to run a Linux Distro that is built from scratch,
then look no further.
It has been a challenge to compile this, but in the end I believe i will enjoy working with Gentoo.

Hey Daniel, thank you for the reply. Please do not feel any "pressure" to respond quickly, I'm in no hurry as things seems to be running smoothly and I realize that others do have a life of their own to live.

I went with the default install options because, as an inexperienced Linux user, I knew that the customization options presented to me would be read as Greek.

I have heard of Gentoo (it's the Penguin logo, right?) but I'm going to steer clear of those types of distros or the foreseeable future until I get much more accustomed to all of the nuances of Linux.

Do your thing, and when you're ready and able to help just send a message and we'll go from there.

Kindest Regards,

joseywales

Hi Josey
One of the first things I need from you are the specs for your machine, but I will say upfront, that you
will have to learn how to partition your drive. If at all possible, another drive installed in your pc would
be the best to work with, you could then use Mint to partition the new drive before even installing
another distro.
