I use HOTMAIL and not my server, thus no POP accounts. Within Hotmail, unless I contact a person, all incoming mail is sent to the JUNK folder. I open this folder every so often, and unless I know the sender, it's treated as JUNK (garbage) and removed automatically. I find the filters that Hotmail uses to be much better than anything else on the market (since they administer it, and I'm not bothered trying to do the filtering myself with add-on programs.
I did use the POP system, and it was a pain, especially when it came to SPAM (JUNK) mail. Now, I get that occasional email, but it's put into the Junk folder, so my Inbox is clutter free, Mindblower!

I guess I'm a bit lucky, my ISP actually provides free spam filtering as part of its service. The only minor PITA with that system is that it occasionally flags a legitimate message as spam so I need to log-on to my account from time to time and check through the "held" messages.
I also use MailWasher (email/spam manager). The ISP based filter catches around 98% of all spam and MailWasher takes care of the rest.
I keep my spam stacked neatly in the cabinet, in a row with labels indicating what days I plan to eat it. I have not had any problems with this setup.
oh, email.
I use Gmail so it filters out 99% of my Spam, and now I just need to get it to filter the Bacon.

Anyway, I actually don't get any spam. How is it possible?
I use a number of aliases and disposable email addresses on the Internet - first spam I get, alias dies.
I have two genuine email addresses - a personal one (for friends & family) and one professional (for co-workers & clients).
Problem solved.

I've seen friends that use a single one email address find their address move from list to list to list... no ending harassment, can not imagine to have to deal with it.
What I find interesting, is that even with the system I use, I had to kill only two aliases (out of about 50) in the past couple of years. Maybe spammers just don't like me

Found this interesting link (below) within one of my Microsoft Bulletins were they talk about creating an alias account within your Hotmail account. Some may find it very informative, since it follows along the lines the Flying Dutchman used, Mindblower!

The good news is:
1. It lets you put in anything you like before "@" - your aliases shouldn't indicate what your protected address is.
2. You have three choices for the part after "@": hotmail.xx (where xx stands for your country), hotmail.com and windowslive.com.
Only drawback, the activation of the alias seems to not be done automatically - still waiting for the confirmation email for the test alias I created.
Still, this is actually not bad.

EDIT: Got a confirmation email after almost 10 hours. Conclusion: Nice service, but not if you need an alias straight away.

I'll side with Dave, how well does replying to spam work for you?
Given the methods and tactics used by spammers, it's highly unlikely that your reply lands at the true/ original sending party.
But in case it does, you only manage to confirm that your email address is a live one, i.e. one with value for the spammers.
