It sounds as though this is a Gmail problem and Gmail is aware of it and working on it. Since Gmail is run entirely from the web, chances are very good that there is nothing you can do to fix the problem.
A quick search shows a lot of Gmail users are reporting this issue.
And this:

Hi all,
Again, we thank everyone for your patience while we've been working on this. We believe we've identified a fix for this problem and are working to implement the fix within the next two weeks. We'll make sure to provide any updates as we have them.
We know this has been frustrating and thank you for your understanding while we work on this.

You can right click the images and save them.
Another option is to use an email client (outlook, outlook express, thunderbird, etc). I haven't heard of anyone experiencing the problem when they use an email client (I haven't). An added advantage (if you use POP3 access) is that the email can live on both Googles servers and your PC - effectively giving you a backup without any effort.
