I downloaded a .rar file from the internet that I can not open because I do not have the password. It has been 4 years since it was posted and I have not been able to contact the person who made the file available for public download. Still can't figure out why it was made available for download if it required a password?
It is a 1 GB movie file and so most online file converter websites will not handle a file that big.

Would appreciate any ideas as to what I can do to open the file.
Thank you.

Hi Myles,

I wouldn't open it at all. Many movies, especially the "free" ones, come at a price none of us would want to pay.

I would shuck that file and I couldn't do it fast enough.

Richard

To myleswest and anyone who downloads over the internet.

Do yourselves a favour and NEVER, bother to waste your time with a *.rar file.

Rar extensions are made up of compressed packets like Zip. Ideal to share with family and friends via email, since those packets are small. Typically sending several packets get past the max imposed when sending attachments. They need to be merged, to form the completed file, so they are safe to send this way. If one or more packets are somehow corrupted they can get resent to allow for the completed merger.

But uploading a rar file (a large file made up of those tiny packets) and wanting to share with others, makes no sense at all. Those tiny packets added together actually increases the total size and consumes more bandwidth, and if there is a corrupt segment, good luck.

Now some safety tips when downloading files.

Always use a VPN program and not just a browser with a VPN. Browsers with a VPN only protect your ip address from the sites you visit, not the information you might want to download. To keep your downloads from being exposed, always use a VPN program.

Better to be safe and informed, Mindblower!
