Just read through Judy's blog about the Facebook take-over of the Oculus rift.

I actually have one of these VR goggles..cost $350 ish and shipped from China.
I've found them very gimmiky and they will probably go the way of the beloved Lava Lamps of the '60,s.
Great for the first few minutes but only to go "WOW". After any more than ten minutes and your world becomes very weird and motion sickness etc taketh over.

I know these first units are only 600x800 and the second version will be 1080p but I do not think that will help much. It's extremely hard to immerse oneself into a game, much better for just walking about in pre-rendered scenes of rooms and gardens.
I enjoyed the way one can look about as in "real life" but actually game playing is nowhere as enjoyable as one might think. So probably by this "sell out" the original designers have realised the limits of their baby and are getting out now?
