iPod or What?

Hey all!

Not sure if this is the site or thread to ask this but here goes anyhow.

I've been thinking about getting an ipod, but I'm not sure if it's what I need. My son has an iphone but I don't like using a flat surface against my face for a phone. Already got a cell phone anyhow, but only use it rarely.

Anyway, I would like a portable device that I can have all my videos, some movies, pictures & audio recordings in, plus lots of apps ... not 'gamer' apps, but real games like scrabble, Yahtzee, frogger ... LOL, to entertain myself when I'm stuck somewhere. Want to be able to read books on this device too and have internet access/email as needed would be real nice as well.

So, is the ipod what I need or something else? If so, which one? There must be a few hundred kinds out there. My foggy 'old hen' brain cannot process all the info!

Thanks for any and all help!

Sorry to say I only have the following rantings, no real solution.

I firmly believe in NOT keeping all my eggs in one basket (something others enjoy doing). Must be from an old generation, where one used a tool for what it was intended to fix (and not use anything to replace a hammer).

Today, the Swiss Army Knife (in gadget terms) means you can have just about everything in one package (and pray you don't lose it - or have multiple copies on multiple units). Since most don't backup (till too late), having everything on one unit might be a great backup idea (but then it should be kept in a safe place), Mindblower!

Hey Selahgal - Sounds like the iPod [i:27k4muu1]Touch[/i:27k4muu1] would be the one for you. Take a look at this page here, it shows the different types of iPod across the page with details of each one's capabilities underneath: http://www.apple.com/ipod/comp.....od-models/

Don't really know of any other device, outside of the smart phones, which would have that sort of capability......except, of course, for the more expensive iPad.

Cheers.....Jim

I hear ya! Guess one would have to be careful with it ... as they would their wallet, purse or cell phone!!

I dislike most Apple products, but it certainly sounds like the Ipod Touch is what you're wanting.

There are alternatives, but none of them do quite everything the Touch does (yet).

My personal thought would be to use a Motorola Droid but keep it unlocked from the carrier with no service. It will still work across WiFi and do pretty much everything you're looking for (this is what I'm doing when work stops paying for my cell service).

That's an interesting solution Zig. I like it! I'm not a fan of Apple's products, and especially the software they force you to use (iTunes), which always installs way more than needed and often installs programs you didn't even request (Safari browser, etc).

If this were a basic MP3 player question there would be a ton of answers, such as the Sansa players from Sandisk. It does appear that Archos just released several Android based MP3/Media players you might want to check out - http://www.archos.com/products/ta/index ... us&lang=en.

iPod touch are very fragile. A month ago I went for travel and I had my iPod touch in my pocket all the time. Later on when I tried to open it, it would open, the menu button got stuck. It seems like weak glue is used to hold menu button in place, and that led button to move from its place.
It's a 2nd generation iPod touch.
