Ok, this is not a tutorial is a question. I often visit giveawayoftheday page and most of the time the programs are registered automatically. I know the registration key should be on the registry, I just can not find it so I can reinstall the program latter and reusit. Programs like license crawler will not findit, so the only way to think about solving this is backing up the registry key for the program and add it at a latter usage. Any suggestions guys?

Possible solution at my 3rd repaly

coolczone - Assuming it is actually a registry item which is causing this issue....could you not just backup the [i:1q5fkums]entire[/i:1q5fkums] registry and restore that backup after re-installing any of the GAOTD software??

Jim, backing up and restoring the entire registry could have some....'interesting' implications if the software setup is not identical at the time of the restore. Not saying it's not a good idea though, just be cautious.

Zig, yes you are right again mate!! Silly me, of course...there could be multiple changes to the registry in the interim. Don't know what I was thinking, I haven't even had a little drinkypooh yet.....put it down to stress caused by overwork??

Did you hear about the bloke who went to the psychiatrist? He walks in and and the doctor says, "What can I do for you?" The man says "Well doc, it's like this...some days I think I'm a wigwam and other days I think I'm a teepee." The doc nods sagely and says "I know what's wrong with you, you're too tense!!"

Cheers....Jim

Wow, that was bad.

Coolczone -- the GOTD software installs purposefully bury the registration keys (if they use them at all) to underscore the [b:155yc48s]free for one day only[/b:155yc48s] aspect of their site. In may cases, the wrapper they place around the install handles the activation key without using a key, which is why you can't find one.

Thanks guys for the time you spent in helping me. I guess I'll just keep hunting for the readme file that sometimes slips trough the serial. How about the freeware [b:3fjjudti]whatchanged[/b:3fjjudti]. Any of you ever tried to isolate the license from the registry using this tool? Actually I will try it right now and come back with the result. Thanks again.

Ok, I've been trying for 1 hour now. First attempt was made with whatchanged, but it took forever to scan my registry. I used the freeware regshot ( http://www.regshot.ru/20/). This might be in Russian I guess, but if you scroll at the bottom and hit the left button the download will start. Than you will have to modify the ini file( change the language from russian to english, or leave it like that if you like ) so you could use the program. I took a 1st shot, installed the program, activated with the activator from giveaway, took the 2nd shot. I compared the reg shots and backed up all the new and modified registry keys using regseeker, another freeware ( http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm). I uninstalled the software, cleaned the registry and reinstalled it again this time trying to register it using my backed up registry keys. It turned out that the registration was in the file having the same name as the program. I had a total of 7 new/modified keys so the work is not enormous. The registry key with the license was in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/[program name]. I never tried this on another program so I can not tell if this path is always the same. The method seems to work so this is what I'll do next time.
You will have to back up your original installer from the giveaway,as the reg key will work only with the giveaway soft.

Thanks guys for your suggestions.

Welcome coolczone.

For all those GOATD's where the readme.txt contains registration info, I always download and trial from website & try registering using the readme.txt info. It works 90% of the times, saving my time to go through the registry.

Yes, for most of the rest data will be in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/[program name]. & for the others nowhere I could find.
