Just wondering how many members out there use this service and if they are happy with the latest forced change by microfart? I might be forced to find another account, so I'd appreciate feedback as to why you like your current one. Kindly exclude Yahoo, AOL, and those given by internet providers (kind of defeats the purpose). Thanks in advance, Mindblower!

Mindblower,

I haven't had a (not so) Hotmail account in a loong time so I can't comment on the recent changes. I can recommend Gmail. Less obtrusive ads, lot's of storage, great spam detection, free & easy POP3 access.

Thanks Dave. Guess I'm dreaming if I think there is a NO ads email, Mindblower!

wow...hotmail.

I haven't used hotmail since....well, since before my kids were born. Not since gmail came out actually.

I use gmail. It's by far the best free service out there (though, I am kind of partial to gurlmail (which sadly, doesn't exist anymore. LoL).

There are also pay versions. 1&1 internet offers email service for decent rates. I believe their paid versions are ad free too.

I can well imagine all of you hotshots poised and ready to jump my bones but I must say this: I use Hotmail.

Please let me explain. Then give me your guidance.

My primary email address is Hughes.net as they are my ISP - via satellite, no less. I don't use it unless I absolutely must. Seems that one must say the Rosary or otherwise plead and pray that an attachment will actually be attached or that a mail will actually be forwarded and, to compound and add insult to injury, their site is an abomination. Forward to Hotmail. I use MSN as my home page. I have ready access to all of the news of the day which I voraciously read. Since Hotmail is a part of the MSN it was only natural that I gravitate to it given my displeasure with Hughes.net. Can't say that I'm enthralled with Hotmail either. My wife uses Incredimail which I assume to be nothing more than a "forwarding address" to Hughes. There seems to be a plethora of amenities to Incredimail which my wife navigates through with remarkable ease.

Now - I'm not one to accept something because of the elegance in its complexity. That is so much nonsense. What I REALLY would like is an email service which is elegant in its SIMPLICITY and yet comprehensive at the same time. I'm a quick study yet do not enjoy jumping through hoops in order to accomplish the simplest of tasks. I might very well be alluding to the ideal email service. In your learned opinion(s), does such an entity really exist? I'm cognizant of the fact that there may be differing opinions but I'm definitely open to any and all suggestions.

Educate this old man, if you please.

Richard

Hi Richard:

There is a FREE e-mail program from Mozilla (same company that produces Firefox web browser). Thunderbird is a client based program that resides on your computer, not in space like Hotmail or Yahoo mail.

It has everything you would be looking for, but is fairly simple to navigate. Of course the draw back to it is that it is not accessible over the internet like Hotmail. But if that isn't an issue for you give it a try.

Here is a link to the download site: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/t.....underbird/

Of course this is only one of many that are available, I'm sure some of the other guys have other ideas as well.

Hope this answers you question.

I've found that gmail is easy to use, simple, yet has as many features as you could ask for. The only thing to get used to is the use of 'labels' versus 'folders'. but once you get that, it's pretty quick to figure out.

I would never bash someone for their choice of hotmail. I would mercilessly make fun of someone though, who uses hotmail but complains about it incessantly.

Nightowl - thanks for the link. Will investigate.

Ziggie - You're a trip. Thanks for the lead, son.

Hi Richard - Thunderbird is an installed email client and as such still requires the services of 'Hughes.net'. In order to avoid the your ISP you will need to stick with webmail, such as Hotmail.
Zig's suggestion of Gmail (webmail) is a good one, I haven't used it myself but the majority (including many 'experts') rate it very highly.

wish you well mate,
JIM

To Richard: Did you read my post - since I'm the one who started this thread. I've been using Hotmail for years, have loved using it, but this latest forced change, where the screen is predivided and one cannot shrink the windows is the pits. There is something seriously wrong with a company which uses backward thinking.

To Gmail users: Thank you since I'll be giving it a look and see (actually opening an account very soon).

To the mention of using POP. I prefer not to go that route, since it means using your Providers email account via other service - something with is a pain, since providers come and go, thus so does your email account. Prefer a permanent account (that's why I selected Hotmail years ago).

To All: Thanks for the input and its been an interesting experience. Mindblower!

oh, and as an alternate alternative you could always purchase your own domain and host email on it (1&1 offers a service like this). Here ([url:3q6nb6kj]http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/MailInstantMail;jsessionid=769C926931ECA8F6597A580992360E5C.TC60b?__frame=_top&__lf=Static[/url:3q6nb6kj]) is a service for 99 cents a month for example. Then you never have to worry about your email disappearing and you can use webmail or you can use thunderbird (or another, etc.).

Lotsa choices.

Plus, you can do what I do which is to host your own email, but have Gmail check it for you. That way you don't even have to mess with POP clients.

Mindblower -- Gmail offers POP service for free. You can use Gmail and have POP access and keep your "permanent" account.

Mindblower -

Yes, I did read your original post but somehow got bogged down with the notion that Hotmail wasn't so hot after all. Didn't mean to subvert your thinking and sorta stomp on your toes. I can definitely relate to your objections and, perhaps, that is what prompted me to seek help - as you did - in finding another service. My opening line was a bit too strong and I apologize if I made an unwarranted assumption.

It would be nice if we could follow the lead of those who recommended an alternative and then share the information.

Respectfully,

Richard

It seems I stomped on Richard and for this/that I am sorry, since this was (always is) NOT my intent. (In case the this is confusing, it's NOT, okay, both ways). Actually wanted to vent my fury with others who are pissed with the Hotmail service (since I enjoyed it for many years, and now it's time to find an alternative - unless this change can be quickly undone), Mindblower!

Mindblower -

It's water under the bridge, my friend. There's bigger fish to fry.

I've only had time to investigate one alternative. Ziggie recommended "gmail" so I went to the site and joined so as to get a feel for how easy/difficult it was to navigate in an effort to get something done. Aside from getting used to the names that they use for various functions/aspects, it shows promise. I intend to exercise it as well as I'm able between it and my primary email address (Hotmail) in an effort to determine whether it suits my needs in better fashion. You might also give it a try. I'd be interested in your opinion and we could compare notes.

Respectfully - Richard
