This question has just recently come to light in my family. My youngest daughter asked me if I thought her eldest son (aged 10) should be allowed to setup a Facebook account and start his own page. I answered no, he is too young.
Personally I do not like Facebook for any age...but that is a different story.
The difficulty my daughter is experiencing is that many of her son's friends are already using Facebook......ain't peer pressure wonderful!!
I still don't think it is a good idea and I regard those parents who allow children of that tender age to use social sites such as Facebook as being somewhat irresponsible; but then I am an old fuddy duddy.
What do you think??
I probably won't let my kids on until 14 or 15 - depending on their maturity level.
A friend of mine let his 11 year old on Facebook - but he and his wife have to approve her friends and they know her password. She only uses facebook in the main room and keep a close eye on her.
I barely use Facebook myself, but I know it can be pretty scary. :/
So Jim, what did your daughter decide to do?
From my personal experience with kids between the ages of 6 to 12, the majority (or they usually):
1. Can't offer a satisfying reply when asked "why is it a bad thing to put in your real name & other personal info when online", i.e. they don't understand the dangers.
2. Click their way through anything in front of them on the PC screen.
3. Won't bother to even read the instructions of games - and I'm talking about simple games with simple instructions.
So, any kid that falls under even only one of the above three is not ready to go on Facebook.

Regarding the latter, sometimes it's helpful to make the child question if it's necessary for him/ her to always do what their friends do, by providing an obviously negative example.
On a side note, Jim, you could also ask the question "Facebook - Is it suitable for all adults?"

I'm happy to say she ended up sticking to her guns and not allowing her child to play with Facebook......yay!!!!

Perhaps we should start a new thread where we can all rant against these silly, useless, dangerous social sites.
Fortunately, most of my peers think that 'Facebook' is something you read in bed and 'tweats' are only associated with budgerigars.
