Back in 2004 or 2005 i used my first add blocker using Norton and ever since i have been a fan of add blocking and flash blocking, as some sites rely on advertisements for support and im against advertisements, do you think this is an injustice to the site owners, for e.g i visit a forum that mainly deals with hardware and the site detects the prescence of an add blocker.
although we can throw security into the mix, im really wondering do you think it is cheating by blocking the advertisements or do you just allow for that particular site..
Another forum i belong to, once logged in the advertising disappears, more as a perk...
if i have posted this in the wrong section please delete
Hi Jay - This section will do nicely mate.
You raise a very good point!! It really presents a moral dilemma, doesn't it. A lot of the sites we visit and utilise for free rely on ads to help finance site overheads and maintenance. In the vast majority of cases, site owners are not using advertising platforms such as Adsense to make profits, merely to help keep their site alive.
There is no doubt ads can be annoying and especially if they are randomly interspersed among articles, or popup out of the blue. There is an argument that users of ad blocking programs are most unlikely to click on ads anyway but that, IMO, is missing the point.
If we are prepared to utilise free sites and the information and services provided (also for free) then should we not also accept the ads as being part and parcel of the free package. That is of course, provided site owners do not take the utilisation of ads to an unacceptable extreme. I believe most site owners are astute enough to realise that, while ads are going to help generate some income, over doing it is only going to annoy people and possibly have the opposite effect. To that end, I think most site owners would strive to attain a happy medium.
Nice post mate!!
Cheers.....Jim
My outlook on this has changed over the years. Originally I blocked all ads. But then I realized I was only hurting the people who's content I was using.
So I've upgraded to FlashBlock. It doesn't block anything except flash unless I tell it not to specifically. And honestly, I was sick of the punch the monkey ads anyway.
This allows me to see the ads on the content I'm reading, while ignoring the flash ads that seem to appear still on the web (sigh).
Sorry for the delay in reading and replying to this interesting topic. Adds are commercials. We are constantly bombarded with commercials (adds) in this Electronic Media age. I'm aware that Adds pay for many of the so-called free items we get, but I personally am sick to death of this waste of my time. I'm glad that there are devices that can skip the commercials on the programming (TV shows) I receive, and I listen to pre-recorded music on my mp3 while driving. Most of the NEWS I receive is online, so yes, I use Add Blocking software, and proudly admit this to the world.
Ever wonder why you get commercials (adds), when to pay to watch a movie (or purchase the DVD)? I'm not referring to movie previews, but darn right commercials. Billboards pop up everywhere, busses carry adds on the inside and outside, and so on. So, I do my part to BLOCK (filter out), as much of this unwanted junk as possible.
Do the math, a one hour TV shows contains about 20% advertising, and most radio stations also contain about 20% advertising in a one hour slot, Mindblower!

Thank you guys i enjoyed reading your replies and appreciate the time you took to post them, the point about the DVD was really interesting, not only do you purchase the DVD but some come with annoying advertisements, the plus been one or two films that would be of interest.
There is always two sides to any story..
