Hi Folks.
I have a great appreciation for note-taking, and it is the only way I remember stuff in my old age !!!

I have been looking FOREVER for a script/program/whatever to be able to store, access and edit simple textual notes on my website.

Something truly ideal would be alot like Zim:
http://www.zim-wiki.org/

(I've no need for the calendar, toolbar & equation thingies...)
Yes...even though Zim is originally Linux-based, it has no hosted version.

Or like Tomboy Notes:

Preferably it'd have an index too (...like Zim or Tomboy Notes).

There is a hosted thing LIKE Tomboy - but to host it one must run one's very own server and all I have is shared Linux Hosting...and speaking of which, I thought I'd found a solution finally, here:
http://www.Planet-Source-Code.com/vb...=1504&lngWId=8

But after uploading it and extracting/Chmodding it I could not get it past error messages - and I'm no coder, so I gave up.

I have about 1000 TXT files that I'd like to store & re-use via my site; it's sort of like a dream of mine...does anyone here know of such a thing ?

Thanks !!!

Are these notes that need to be kept private?
Do they need to be secure?
Does it have to be on the web, or would a local (computer) program work?

Hello Dave, and thanks !

Private - yes.

Secure ? Not fanatically, but sufficiently...

And on the web vs. local - well, Zim/Tomboy are already local - I've tried every variation of sync too - and what I haven't found is such a thing for the web...so that's a resounding YES!, on the web, please.

Thanks and Best Wishes !

OK, you're on shared hosting. Are you running Wordpress, a CMS, or static pages?

Hi Dave, and thanks.

I have a domain for 'play' (which was to be for business until I remembered selling stuff ain't for me...), so except for when I am experimenting it remains empty and is only an anchor for an email account.

Currently on that space I am 'playing' with (and learning about) Tiki Wiki=> which is very, very impressive !! (But it may not do what is desired despite how well made it is.)

For anyone wanting a very full-featured basis for an entire site & structure I will add that I've tried most of the OS CMSs & found them to be VERY sorely lacking.

The best/worst example was (fill in the blank) ....... Baker, and I say this because when I asked for help their goderator got so mad that he PERMANENTLY banned me from their forum.  (Meh, no biggie=> out it went, in went Joomla !!!)((Which is cool, but a bit complicated in execution.))

By way of contrast, the most difficult thing I've found yet with Tiki Wiki was gaining access to their forum because they had a spam problem and shut down registration to their community until that is solved.

But that was not a big deal as 1 chat session and 2 emails later I was merrily getting GREAT info from the very helpful members there.

In the past I dabbled with Wordpress and didn't care for it, and where I do have website content presently is just static pages because I never found a complete-website-making software which was sane enough for my liking, and as said above - I've tried out ALOT of CMSs too.

A side note regarding s/w in general as well as website making:

As an old 'DOS guy' from way back, I still object to any s/w which trashes the HDD and/or OS by taking huge liberties - and apps which REQUIRE 100's of MB are just...out.

Portable and 'green' s/w is vastly preferred by me and I'll even go as far as taking apart an installer to MAKE what I want 'go green' if such is possible.

All the website-makers I've tried install as huge & bloated things and when a site is created they DUMP all kinds of krap any & every place carelessly; then IF one is VERY lucky they MIGHT even get relative links right for navigation, but often simply do not.

My solution when making static site content (for now) is just to use a word processor and Kompozer (portable) to churn out simple pages as I desire them (why bother to learn HTML or any coding when WYSIWYG -does- work ???).

Best Wishes.

Mark,

I highly suggest you take another look into Wordpress! It's come a long way and since 3.0 is a very easy, versatile, and capable package. It works equally well as a framework for static pages with a builtin WYSIWYG editor as it does for a blog.

Now, if you did happen to install WP you could use a forum, just like this one for your note taking. Create a group/forum that is only visible to you. Each topic and its' contents would be searchable/printable/exportable/etc and it would be secure yet accessible (by you and those you choose to allow only) anywhere. Total time? 10 minutes to install and 10 or 15 to setup!

Easy!

You could actually install any forum, but I believe the WP/simple press combo is pretty robust and light on resources.

Thanks Dave, for your glowing recommendation !

I've no recollection of which version I tried.

My stumbling point regarding many things I've tried was the lack of any ability to import and/or accept the zillion TXT files I need imported, as-is, into editable pages.

I even installed and configured phpBB to try this and found there's simply no way for it to import files as posts, which was very sad as it did everything else I wanted, and very well too.

The need for a files=>pages import is a big stumbling block from what I've seen thus far in just about all web apps.

As I mentioned, DokuWiki does fine at taking a folder/file structure and just using it directly - too bad it's a stinker with so many other things, including it's support...!

Another thing I tend to prefer is flat-file storage vs. DB dependency, and when I installed WP before it was 100% DB centered; Does that remain the case do you know ?

Do you recommend any specific theme and/or plug-ins for WP to simulate the simple/plain appearance & indexing shown in Zim ?

Thanks Again !

That is going to be a problem no matter what you do as txt files really have no structure!

PHPBB is quite a bit more complicated (IMHO) than wordpress/simple press combo.

The need for a files=>pages import is a big stumbling block from what I've seen thus far in just about all web apps.

I really think you'll have to suck it up and copy/paste new topics, BUT once they reside in the database you can export, manipulate, import to/from a variety of formats.

WP needs to run on a database, but that offers several advantages - ability to autobackup through wordpress, obscurity when compared to plain txt files, etc.

Do you recommend any specific theme and/or plug-ins for WP to simulate the simple/plain appearance & indexing shown in Zim ?

I would just stick with one of the default themes right off the top. If you do decide to change then only get themes from wordpress.org!

Plugins? You don't need many unless you make the installation "live" - you can make the site/forum require login to even view.

I'd start with Better WP Security to lock down the installation further, WP-DBManager to automate backups and database management, and Simple Press to provide the note functionality you require.

Hi Dave and Thanks !

File conversion (batch-style) is always an easy option for me - would HTML be better ?

Copy/paste...:

For so much content (so many files) would take many months, actually, not very practical.

Thank you !:

One side-note:

If this site is currently running WP, etc - a bit of a mystery:

When I visit here (as compared to big/demanding sites...), it is not only quite slow to load/respond, but also jacks up Firefox's RAM usage by about 40 megs !!!

No other site that I can recall does that to Firefox on my PCs; and it does not clear when I close the tab either, only a restart of FF clears it back to 'normal' levels.

Best Wishes.

I doubt it. The ability for applications to create valid html is not what it should be.

For so much content (so many files) would take many months, actually, not very practical.

one way or another it has to be done at some point if you want the content on the web in a structured format. I manually copied everything from the old site to this one. Not something I would want to do everyday, but it had to be done.

Yes, this is running on WP. 40mb isn't much in this day and age for any program. My guess is you are using the TinyMCE editor - which is a bit more complicated and intensive - instead of the BBCode editor (change available in your profile).

We actually do pretty good on load times considering the complicated things that are going on in the background to help automate all the "cool" things!
