ZoneAlarm Pro is a commercial firewall which includes many more features than the freeware ZoneAlarm version. As well as the usual two-way firewall for protection against malicious attacks from the web and local network, ZoneAlarm Pro also includes an OSFirewall, advanced download protection, ID protection service with free credit bureau monitoring, anti-phishing, and Site Status Toolbar.

The developers are offering a one year license, for the latest full version of their Pro Firewall (normally $39.95), for free [b:1xar3qly]only on 13th October, 2009[/b:1xar3qly].

Hi Jim:

I downloaded and installed the ZoneAlarm Pro on a laptop with Window 7 RC1, it is also compatible with Vista. Everything went smoothly to this point. It has a learning process to go through as far as knowing what you will allow. I'm sure the nags will subside as time goes along. Also this is only a firewall and there is no anti virus included. I have Avira AntiVir Free installed and they seem to be playing nice together.

They try to get you to buy other items as you are in the check out process, so watch carefully what is checked. Also, they required credit card information, although it is free, in order to complete the download process. Make sure to copy and paste the activation key or it won't work properly (this is done after the install).

Not much else at this point, as I only did this about an hour ago. Will post if anything unusual happens. So far so good

That's most probably why they call it ZoneAlarm[b:h48d78bc] Firewall[/b:h48d78bc] and not ZoneAlarm Security Suite or AntiVirus or something else.....

All firewalls go through a 'learning' process Nightowl...just some may take longer than others and some are not very good at remembering what you already told them. ZoneAlarm Pro has a good rep so it should settle down fairly quickly.

Not too fussed on the need for credit card information....that seems a tad odd for a free product. Oh, hang on, just thought...that might be so they can [i:h48d78bc][b:h48d78bc]automatically[/b:h48d78bc][/i:h48d78bc] bill your card for subscription renewal when the license expires. I've heard of other companies doing that, Norton in particular. If you do not wish to renew, you'd better watch that one Nightowl.

Hi Jim:

After reading your post, I thought the suggestion about automatic updates of the license was probably right on target. So I accessed my account (which you have to create)and found that you can opt out of the "automatic update with credit card you have supplied". It is under the "Manage your account" heading.

However, I will still check to make sure they don't charge me when the time comes (of course that's provided I keep the program for the full year).

Hi all:

For those that would like to try this firewall and use the opt out feature so you won't be billed automatically, here are the steps to find the opt out.

After you have installed the program you will have a short cut on your desktop, double click the icon and the main window for changing settings, etc. will appear. On the left hand side you will see "Overview" with three sub categories, one of which is "Product Info", click on that and on the next window that opens you will see "Support and Update Information" in that area there is "For technical support..Click here". That will open the Tech Support site, on the right side click on "Log into my account". After logging in click on "Manage account" on the left side, on the next page that opens click on "Manage Subscriptions" which will open the "Subscription Manager" page, the second item down on the page is "Automatic License Renewal". In that window is a drop down menu that has "Renewal Options", select "Do not auto-renew this product".

I hope this isn't to confusing, if so post back and I'll try and help as much as I can. It sounds like a long process, but it really isn't that bad and will save you from being charged for a new renewal that you may not want.
