An early model for Microsoft's next operating system, codenamed Windows 8, was demonstrated very recently. It seems this latest permutation is set to largely imitate the way in which mobile device systems operate. 'App' tiles to replace program icons and the expansion of touch screen operations appear to be a certainty.
In many ways it makes perfect sense for Microsoft to take full advantage of the burgeoning mobile device market and make the latest OS more appealing for 'younger' consumers. Which is exactly what they will achieve if Windows 8 is a natural extension of the systems already being utilised in tablets and high end cell phones.

Hey FD - Well I haven't retired from anything just yet. That is....if you discount working, remembering, seeing, running (and most other strenuous exercise for that matter).
I'm still waiting for the voice function computer, as demonstrated in the Original Star Trek series. Believe the best example was in in of the Star Trek movie (had to do with sending a whale back in time to save planet Earth) where Scotty tries talking to the computer, then in lighting speed types the instructions, Mindblower!

I used to watch the Original Star Trek series as a kid. The one thing that made the biggest impression on me was the transporter that "beamed" the team where ever they needed to go.
Still waiting for it.
