There is no doubt that the debacle surrounding the much maligned Vista operating system had Redmond back pedaling for a while. That, plus the proliferation of quality web applications, had critics wondering if Microsoft was backing the wrong horse by continuing on with Windows 7 and associated desktop applications.
Well, it appears any doubts have now been well and truly put to rest. Latest figures suggest that Windows 7 is booming and the good old desktop environment remains alive and well.
Steve Ballmer recently announced that more than 400 million Windows 7 licenses have been sold in less than two years. During his keynote speech, Ballmer also announced that Office 2010 has sold over 100 million copies. That makes Windows 7 the fastest selling operating system in history, with 7 copies of the latest Windows O.S. sold every second. It also makes Office 2010 the fastest selling version of Office in history.
According to independent source (NetMarketshare), Windows 7 is now running on 27.13% of all PCs worldwide (as of June 2011).
Score Redmond +1 -- the doomsayers a big fat zero.
Hmmm, well that is certainly not the case here in Oz MB. Prices here started out comparative with previous Windows operating systems and have remained so.

OEM editions commence at around $130.00aud (Home Premium)
Windows 7 might be discounted in other countries but that certainly does not appear to be flowing on to Oz.
