I've been playing with VB off and on for a few years now, but this is the first time I've had problems.
Host is Win 7 x64, UEFI mobo with no virtualisation option in the bios (?) screen.
AMD FX 8320 16Gb RAM
Guest is Win XP pro SP 2 x86.
VB is latest 4.3
Guest additions installed, including 3d in guest safe mode.
Extension pack 4.3 also installed incl USB 2.0
I keep getting this error when connecting a Kingston pen drive into a USB 2.0 port (it's definitely 2 and not 3).
Also, I know the 3d acceleration is experimental, but it certainly doesn't work for me.
Any VB experts out there?
Cheers
Marc

Hey Marc - What I know about VB and VMs in general could probably fit on the back of a postage stamp. I tried installing VB once, not so long ago, but couldn't even manage that modest achievement.

Now, this may seem like a pretty obvious question, sorry mate if it offends, but have you tried with a different USB stick? I only ask because I've experienced issues in the past with certain USB sticks reacting badly with certain software, mainly because of some pre-installed backup or security software on the USB flash drive.

Cheers mate... Jim

Hi Jim
Yes, I've tried an older stick with the same results.
Oddly enough, I'm running VB on another similarly specced PC, experienced the same problem, noticed a USB driver in XP guest wasn't installed, fixed that and the problem was solved.
It's not a major issue as I've set up a share between host and guest, but you know what it's like when you like to find a solution.
What's more of an issue is the 3d acceleration (experimental) with direct3d and opengl, which other users have successfully implemented.
Cheers
Marc

Hi Marc,

Have you tried adding the USB device in settings?

1. Shut down the guest OS
2. Plug in your stick and Select the OS and Click Settings, then USB; make sure the USB Controller check box is enabled; you can try the USB 2.0 check box but that gives me an error (I'm currently using Zorin Linux)
3. Click the Add icon on the right and a list should drop down with the currently plugged in devices
4. Add the USB stick in question

What I know about VB would fit in a corner of Jim's stamp.

Curious if this works,
Richard

Hi Richard
Done that with no luck.
According to the VB forums, this error may occur when connecting a USB device to a USB 3.0 port, which VB doesn't support. But this isn't the case here as the port I'm using is definitely USB 2.0. Tried it with and without the USB 2.0 controller.
I'll keep plugging away.
Cheers
Marc

Hi Marc. I tried VB but started using VMPlayer with better success. I currently am running an XP VM on one of my windows 8 machines and Vista on another one. I also have Ubuntu on a VM. Never could get VB configured the way I wanted. Good luck. Daniel.

Thanks for that Daniel.
VB USB works fine on another machine of a similar spec, so I'll keep plugging away at that.
I'm also going to look at VM Player free as I believe the Plus version is $99.
Cheers

I use the free 6.0 version of VMPlayer. Don't know when you cross the line from home use to commercial use. If I had a business I would be using one of their workstation platforms. I use XP in a VM to run my usb scanner. Software that the scanner uses will not install in windows 8. I do have to make sure that the driver for whatever usb device I am using is running in the guest O/S and not the host, I have to disconnect the device from the host.Daniel
