The folks at VNUnet.com are currently offering the full commercial version of 'TuneUp Utilities' for free. Yes, it is the 2007 version but, according to reports, there are no new major features in the 2009 version. To learn more about this offer read here: http://for-free-on-internet.com/2008/12 ... vnunetcom/

Or go directly to the download page here: http://www.v3.co.uk/vnunet/downloads/22 ... ities-2007

cheers....JIM

Jim --

The page won't load for me--I imagine it got dug or slashdotted by this point.

I'm trying to track down what these utilities do. Any thoughts on that? Is this worth getting as a just in case even if we can't see a point to it? Is there a point to it?

Zig - Both pages are still loading okay for me....no problemo. I'm using Firefox with just a hand full of add-ons....the offer is still valid.

As to the usefulness of TuneUp Utilities....I don't judge (nor offer an opinion on) these things coz everyone's needs/wants differ. This is what the VNUnet.com site has to say about it:

[i:4pgptfqh]"TuneUp Utilities 2007 takes care of all these concerns by bringing all the best Windows tweaks together in one program. And there are plenty of powerful features on offer.

The TuneUp Styler 2, for instance, offers many ways to customise the way Windows looks. You're able to change just about any system icon, change the icon spacing on your desktop or remove the arrow from shortcuts. A Repair function rebuilds the appropriate cache if your icons aren't displaying properly. And you can install new boot or logon screens, visual styles or icon sets. If you don't have any suitable images yourself then it's even possible to download free images or icons from the TuneUp Utilities site.

If you're more interested in practical features then try the DiskCleaner to remove redundant files from your hard drive, or perhaps wipe away invalid Registry entries with the Registry Cleaner. Another tool will defragment the Registry to improve performance, while the System Optimizer applies a range of tricks to speed up your desktop, hard drives, Internet connection and browser.

Occasionally it looks like the TuneUp Utilities are simply reproducing existing Windows utilities, but look more closely and you'll find these versions have their advantages. For example, the TuneUp Registry Editor comes with a far better Find tool than REGEDIT, allowing you to use wildcards, or restrict your search to particular key types or a specific area of the Registry. It could justify installing the program all on its own."[/i:4pgptfqh]

I [i:4pgptfqh]can[/i:4pgptfqh] say that it has received very favourable reviews from editors and users. Doesn't really excite me, but that is just me...others may be thrilled with something like this.

cheers mate.....JIM

Oh, okay....sorry about that. I didn't think to check that out....remiss of me. I'll do that right now.

One minute later:- Ooops, apologies to all concerned...you are right MB, the download link is not working. I can only surmise that this offer has expired. So sorry, another lesson learned (never too old, eh). In future I shall double check the download link for these offers before posting.

I've given myself an uppercut,
cheers.....JIM
