I recently included the TinyWall 2.0 firewall (T.W.) along with MSE, Windows own firewall - in Vista - and a couple of manually run anti-malware apps for my security. First, I'm clear about the need to run Windows firewall with T.W., but what about Windows Defender? Should it be on as well or are we inviting conflicts?
Second, in the T.W. Application Exceptions window at set-up, there is the option for " Filter" listed. Does anyone know its purpose and an example of when it's used?
Hi - Windows Defender should be left ON, TinyWall will not conflict with Windows Defender at all. Basically, anything which runs fine with Windows Firewall enabled will run fine with TinyWall.
'Filter' under 'Application Exceptions' is a kind of "Quicksearch" feature. When you start typing text in there, only those entries which contain the text you typed in will be displayed in the list below. It also searches in the path, not only in the executable name. The feature is useful for people who have a lot of entries in the list.
HTH,
Cheers... Jim
P.S. Dave just reminded me - MSE actually includes all the same functionality as Defender. So if MSE is installed, Defender becomes redundant anyway. Check your Windows Defender status, it should have been automatically turned off during the MSE install and should be left that way.
