Now confusingly called of course, I have a customer machine where the entire contents of the inbox have evaporated and NOT intentionally deleted.
Apparently it started with a message like 'Oops, your inbox appears to be empty..' or words to that effect.
When I received the machine it then had 23 emails in the inbox and the following day zero, with no user intervention.
I've Googled this ad infinitum with no real solution forthcoming, particularly from Microsoft.
The PC has been scanned and is virus free.
The key here seems to be that when your online emails have disappeared, they appear to have gone forever without a backup, which is why I've installed Windows Live Mail 2012 on this one, so that at the very least there is some local backup.
This problem is still a mystery to me.

There's a very long thread here at Microsoft answers that covers this topic at length.
I'll be checking that some different folders such as DOCUMENTS or PHOTOS have been created or there's a bug or i'm simply just missing something obvious.

Hi Marc
Losing emails? This has happened to me also, through neglect on my part usually, to properly manage my emails. One of the first things I do now when I boot my PC is to open Thunderbird and go through my emails. I delete the ones that I do not wish to keep and save the others to a folder on my data drive. If one doesn't have another drive then create a folder on the C drive or use a thumb drive, just get the emails out of the inbox, if one wants to keep them.

Never come across this myself. However, I would be advising your customer to change his/her password asap. Even if just precautionary.

I would suggest using Mailstore email Backup (it's free ).

It links to pop 3 and outlook. Excellent program.

Does your customer have Forwarding enabled? The forwarding option on is worded in such a way that it reads like the message will be deleted after being forwarded.

Also, the default setting in is to allow recovery of deleted messages, so that might be an option to at least get back what has disappeared.

Are there any rules created that would cause this?
