I took my discussion about software updates here, because it was in the wrong place but mostly because I do not believe software updates are mainly for security flaws - rather for minor tweaking.
Some vendors supply you with a list of items that were done in the latest improvement. If you read first, you have a better understanding as whether to install or ignore.
The only times I do not get a chance to decide for myself, is when I receive security updates for my security software. Even with Windows (8.1 for me), I get the option to ignore some updates.
There is often a fear that if one does not update programs on their computer, they are at risk. I hope there are people out that can shed light on this topic.
And just because a computer is connected to the Internet (receiving updates), a properly installed and maintained security layer(s) of protection will keep users safe. Otherwise while simply surfing or connecting to DCT puts one in danger.
Restating, I believe much of the software (not security software) is for bug fixes and new features one does not really need. Also believe this is just a way for a vendor to keep their product alive (advertising) to attract new customers (even if the software is free), Mindblower!

There is a security site https://iotscanner.bullguard.com/ which will tell you if your computer is or better yet has been compromised in the past. I have included two screen shots to allow you to see my results (and hopefully if you log into the site above, you will get the same results), Mindblower!
