My apologies for miss spelling the software name in the title.  Can't figure out how to change it.  Just looking for advice.  May not be the correct forum either, but hoping it is.  I recently won one of the 20 license give-aways for Aomei Partition Assistant Pro.  I was excited as I had just rec'd my brand new Win 8 laptop this week.  My problem is this, after making the recovery DVDs, and with nothing but the OS on the computer, I used this software to attempt to partition the 500 GB drive. Followed the instructions that came with the programme, and when it asked to restart I allowed it to.  That is the last time the computer worked.  Each time I turn it on, it tries to boot, then says "Windows has encountered a problem and needs to restart", and then this cycle repeats itself.

Called the mfg'r support and after 90 mins. of diagnosis, including booting from the recovery discs, nothing worked.  They are sending me a Win 8 disc, and will walk me through the re-install.  Hopefully this will work, and that I have not done something to the HD requiring a replacement.  Needless to say, I did not say any thing about the attempt to partition the HD to the tech support people.  Any ideas what went wrong?  Did I do this by making some mistake?  Any suggestions will be appreciated. Hey starchy - Performing any partitioning function involves an element of risk, especially if the user is not very experienced. Although, simply creating a new partition (which is what I assume you were attempting) is pretty basic stuff and shouldn't cause any issues.

It's impossible to say where you (or the process) might have gone wrong, so many variables. I seriously doubt the hard drive has been damaged in any way, most likely scenario is that system files were corrupted somehow during the partitioning process. A fresh installation should fix it ... no problem.

On a side note: what brand is your new laptop? I ask because it sounds as though the manufacturer's support has been top notch.

Thanks Jim for your reply.  Have not been back to the forum because of illness, but all is well now.  My new computer is a Dell 15" i5 Win 8.  I had no desire to migrate to 8, I was still learning 7. *LOL* Dell TS sent me a Win 8 disc and driver discs overnight, and called me back the next day.  We tried to install 8 from the disc, and it would not install.  We ended up at a screen that showed, that in fact, there were 7 partitions!  He asked me to delete all except the 2 big ones, C and E, the ones I tried to create using the newly won software.  I could not delete them, actually Delete was greyed out for all of the drives. The window showed the drive letters, the size, amount of free space, and online/offline.  Long story made short, all partitions had no free space.  This baffled the technician, so I was put on hold while he researched the problem.  I noticed a link that asked if I wanted more info, so I clicked it.  It said that all partitions were offline, and to click here to place each or some online.  Told the tech and he said to put them on line, and all was well.  I deleted all but the 2 big partitions and finished the re-install of Win 8.  Computer runs well, except I am having some difficulty finding my way around and getting used to it, but still prefer XP the most.

Someone said the other day, it seems that MS produces a great OS every 2nd release. Win 98 was good, 2000 not so much, then XP worked and Vista was a bomb.  Then 7 was good, and 8 not so well received.  Win 8 seems to be designed for those who have touch screens, like tablets and some $$ laptops.  Just my 2 cents worth, oh yeah, in Canada we no longer have the penny, so I guess it is now my 5 cents worth.

Hey Starchy - Wow, that was some rigmarole to get your machine back up and running again. Could not complain about the support from Dell.
