Yes folks...it appears the people at Avira have been listening to their users. According to 'Download.com' the latest [b:2pk03r0a]free [/b:2pk03r0a]version of AntiVir (V9) now includes the anti spyware [i:2pk03r0a]and[/i:2pk03r0a] anti adware components, which were previously available only in the commercial version. Strangely though, this information does not appear on the AntiVir Free home page, the version comparison guide still shows the anti-spware and anti-adware feature unticked (not available) for the free version. This may simply be because they have not yet updated their web site?
There are other improvements too, for more information read this article from the 'Download.com' blog:

I have been a long time fan of Avast and have been using it for years.....AntiVir has always been recognised and applauded for its excellent detection rates and if the anti-spyware and anti-adware component has indeed been added, I shall seriously consider changing over.

cheers......JIM

A quick follow up. Avira have now updated their web site and included the anti-spyware feature in the comparison chart for the free version. However, they refer to the anti-spyware component in the free version as 'Basic' and in the Premium version as 'Enhanced'.....hmmm, I think I shall stick with Avast after all.

cheers....JIM

Well, if they gave away their full commercial version, they wouldn't have anything to sell. I think there's a better spin they could put on it to get people to switch to them. I've used Avira. It's a great product and I still base my bootable [url=http://askthegeek.kennyhart.com/index.php/2008/09/10/how-to-make-a-bootable-thumb-drive-virus-scanner-for-ntfs-2008-update/:14anlv3w]thumb drive virus scanner[/url:14anlv3w] on their rescue CD release.
