Time to again introduce some of the newer/different freeware around.....products I have recently tripped over during my normal hunt around the web. I trust you may find some of them useful:-

[b:1d0td5sb]PickPick Tools[/b:1d0td5sb] - A tad unusual this one, the site describes it thus..[i:1d0td5sb]"all-in-one software for software developers, graphic designers and home user."[/i:1d0td5sb] The tools include; capture tool, image editor, color picker, color palette, pixel ruler, protractor, crosshair, whiteboard and etc. Best of all, it is [b:1d0td5sb][i:1d0td5sb]portable[/i:1d0td5sb][/b:1d0td5sb].

[b:1d0td5sb]Glary Undelete[/b:1d0td5sb] - Do any of these really work?? I tried quite a few out some time back when one of my delightful grandchildren 'accidentally' deleted something they shouldn't have....no success!! Glary's other products are popular though, 'Glary Utilities' in particular. Who knows, this one may just do the job!!

[b:1d0td5sb]Fences by Stardock[/b:1d0td5sb] - Another interesting idea from Stardock, organise and group icons into separate containers on the desktop. This from the site...[i:1d0td5sb]"draw labeled shaded areas on your desktop, which become movable & resizable containers for your desktop icons. These groups can help bring organization and consistency to your computer's desktop."[/i:1d0td5sb]

[b:1d0td5sb]Comodo Secure DNS[/b:1d0td5sb] - Hmmm...looks like the Comodo people are preparing to take on 'OpenDNS' with this one, it's a very similar concept...no download, just change some settings and start using the Comodo Secure DNS servers.

[b:1d0td5sb]DVDSmith Movie Backup[/b:1d0td5sb] - DVD Decrypter and DVD copying software to copy entire DVD movie to hard drive. Removes all the DVD copy protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) while copying. This from the site...[i:1d0td5sb]"Combining powerful functionality with a straightforward interface, DVDSmith Movie Backup provides an easy way to copy encrypted DVD movie to your hard drive."[/i:1d0td5sb]

[b:1d0td5sb]GFI Backup 2009 Home Edition[/b:1d0td5sb] - I realise there are a lot of these around but this one does sound simple and easy for the not so experienced user. Backup and restore all important data easily....this list of features from the site:- Secure backup of all your important files for FREE. Easy-to-use wizard-driven interface

Another great list by the "Freeware King", Jim.

Hey Jim, you should give the Comodo DNS a try. I know you didn't have much luck with OpenDNS due to the server location.

Actually Dave, I have been using OpenDNS. I went back to it and tried again and this time it seemed to work much better so have stuck with it. Not sure why it was so slow the first time I tried the service.

I [i:1cvipomh]am [/i:1cvipomh]gunna give the Comodo service a try out, after all it is only a matter of changing a coupla numbers. Apparently it launched on 1st July and not too much is known about it at this stage, just what levels of security it offers, etc. But at least I can confirm speed, or lack thereof.

cheers mate,
JIM
