Here is a nifty little tool which will locate and recommended the fastest DNS service for you, personally. Namebench runs a number of benchmarking tests and presents you with the results and recommendations:

[quote:w3tdudn2]Namebench hunts down the fastest DNS servers available for your computer to use. namebench runs a fair and thorough benchmark using your web browser history, tcpdump output, or standardized datasets in order to provide an individualized recommendation. namebench is completely free and does not modify your system in any way. This project began as a 20% project at Google.[/quote:w3tdudn2]

I have been using OpenDNS and Namebench located a DNS server is Sydney Aus which it reported to be 62% faster. Namebench also provides all the DNS settings for the recommended server.

Nifty, I'll have to check it out.

And a general warning to all -- if you don't know who is running the DNS server you are planning to use, you may want to think five or six times before using it.

Carry on.

angelicscar - The warning was not about the software....the download and the software are perfectly safe.

Ziggie's warning was in regards to acting on the advice supplied by Namebench and actually changing your DNS server/address, without checking it out properly beforehand.

There is absolutely no risk involved in downloading and running Namebench,

Cheers...Jim
