Dave,
Thanks for the link to the free BDlot DVD Clone Ultimate.
I have downloaded, installed and ready and anxious to give it a try.
However, I am a being a bit of a neophyte when it comes to this subject:
--opening ISOs
--making ISO
--extracting CD and DVD image files
--converting extracted images to ISO files
--ripping DVD to ISO image
--watch ISO image like physical DVD disc by emulating Virtual Drive
--Etc; Etc;
The users guide does not cover the details like you do explaining in detail how things are done!
This is all that is said:
USERS GUIDE:
Step One
According to specific DVD backup need, you can choose one DVD cloning scheme from left hand function selecting bar.
Step Two
A. Import source DVD disc or DVD Folder saved on your computer by clicking Source DVD's Browse button.
B. After that, set the destination of output blank DVD R / RW disc or directory of outcome DVD folder and ISO image file.
Step Three
Right Click the "Run" button, take a cup of coffee, sit back to the couch and DVD Clone Ultimate will get everything rest done.
This fire-new DVD clone solution is in the most cost-efficient and timely manner possible.
It seem to cover how to put a DVD or CD in the tray and convert it to a ISO image on my computer, but no more details.
When I view items such as "Convert DVD to MPEG2 for Ti..." in Related Articles the benefits are covered but not the how to.
I have searched to try and find a detailed tutorial covering BDlot DVD Clone Ultimate, but apparently none exists.
I am hoping you or one of the group can direct me to a source to understand how to do the many things this app can do.
Thanks again for the link and the wonderful newsletter.
Hey bwc99bwc.
I agree. Just had a look through the onsite How-to guides and they are extremely vague.
Please allow me a little time and I shall download and install the software and try to figure it out. I've had a fair bit of experience with similar software so should be able to get back to you with some answers.
Stand by!!!!
Cheers.....Jim
Jim,
That is sure good news.
I can't tell you how much time I have spent trying to find some usable information.
Nothing can be more helpful than an experienced users comments from first had experience with an issue.
I will be waiting patiently for your posting. I am anxious to learn some new skills!
Thanks so much for your offer to help.
No problemo!!!
Okay, have downloaded and installed the software. The two main functions are:
1) Copy [b:3kfbzjds]ful[/b:3kfbzjds]l DVD contents (including all incidentals and sub menus) - either direct disc to disc copy (1:1) or to hard drive.
2) Copy main title only to hard drive - minus all the incidentals and sub menus.
The first function (No. 1) is initiated by clicking on the first big button across the top of the interface which says "Full DVD Disc Backup".
DVD Clone2.png[/attachment:3kfbzjds]
You now have three further options to: Clone DVD to DVD. Clone DVD to ISO. Copy DVD to VIDEO_TS Folder. Simply select (click on) whichever option you require.
Clone DVD to DVD is self explanatory, this is the option which will copy direct from disc to disc.
Copy DVD to ISO will produce an ISO file which will be saved to the hard drive. This can then be be burned to DVD at any time in the future.
Copy DVD to VIDEO_TS Folder is much the same, except the files will be in original .vob format (.vob is the normal DVD video file format).
The main difference between ISO and VOB movie files is; ISO movie files cannot be viewed on the computer as per normal, only if mounted via virtual hard drive. VOB movie files, on the other hand, can be viewed as per normal via conventional methods (using installed media players such as Windows Media Player).
HOWEVER, the Full Disc Backup function would mainly be utilised for direct copying DVD to DVD only. If you want to save and preserve movies on hard drive as a backup, the preferred method would normally be to save the main movie only and to MPEG2 format. That system will produce much smaller files, so you can fit a lot more movies on the hard drive.
To copy the main movie only to the hard drive, just click on the middle button which reads "DVD Title Backup".
DVD Clone1.png[/attachment:3kfbzjds]
You will now see further options:
Copy to Single MPEG2 File - will save the entire main movie to hard drive in the versatile MPEG2 format, and is the one most would use.
Copy DVD Chapter - will save just a selected chapter (section) of the main movie to hard drive.
Extract Video Only - will save just the video to hard drive, minus audio (although I don't know why anyone would need that)
Extract Audio Only - will save only audio to hard drive (useful for extracting soundtracks from music DVDs to listen to or burn to CD for playing music only).
You will also notice "Browse" or "Save as" buttons adjacent to many of the menus. These can be used to select a new (different to the default) option or location; especially regarding where to save the output files.
Hope that helps. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask away....
Cheers.....Jim
Thanks Dave. I am always looking for new and more innovative software. This removing the DVD protections is a very nice feature allowing me to back up my DVDs to burnable disks that way when the wife leaves them on top of the player for the dogs to chew on it's a blank DVD and not a new movie that I purchasing
Jim,
Thanks for that very helpful explanation.
You have made the use of BDlot DVD Clone Ultimate live up to its claim of being simple to use.
Once you know how to exactly use the app, I can fully agree that it seems to be very intuitive and well designed.
A couple of follow up questions about the usage if you don't mind:
1. When selecting "Clone DVD to DVD is self explanatory, this is the option which will copy direct from disc to disc".
I presume that you need to have either 2 CD or DVD drives, or one of each. I ask for clarification because it early Windows with floppies I seem to recall that there was a way to copy from a floppy to a floppy with just one floppy drive.
2. When selecting "Copy DVD to VIDEO_TS Folder", I did not know I had a VIDEO_TS folder! I found mine listed as video_ts.png. This is its full path:
B:Program Files (x86)AshampooAshampoo Burning Studio 2010 Advancedskinsdefaultdefaultimages
If I click on it it opens A Picasa Photo Window.
So am I correct in assuming that if I save to, what is labeled on my computer as video_ts.png, I will then have a file with a .vob extension that can be played with the Picasa Photo Photo Player, or, I guess, any other media player I elect to open the file with?
3. And finally, if I save a file as an ISO file that then must be viewed with a virtual HDD, how is that actually done?
I can understand that this must seem very rudimentary to you, but since I haven't done this before it has been a mystery, but one you are de-mystifying!
Thanks again for taking the time to explain in such clear and unambiguous manner with the images to make things perfectly clear about copying DVDs.
You are most welcome, glad we could help.

No, not so. One CD/DVD drive will do nicely. Having 2 drives merely provides a little extra convenience, that's all. With 2 drives you do not need to babysit (watch over) the copying process. With the original (source) disc in one drive and a blank disc in the other, the program will do everything automatically.
With one drive; as soon as the program has finished reading and preparing all the files it will then come to a stop and will not continue on until you physically replace the original (source) DVD in the drive with a blank one. Then it will continue on with the second part of the operation, the burning process (an onscreen message to that effect will pop up when the time is right).
[quote:lgrk46er]When selecting "Copy DVD to VIDEO_TS Folder", I did not know I had a VIDEO_TS folder![/quote:lgrk46er]
LOL. You don't have one. The program will create one for you if/when you choose that option. All you need do is tell it where you want the folder saved. You can then go to that folder, open it and play the movie via Windows Media Player or similar.
[quote:lgrk46er]And finally, if I save a file as an ISO file that then must be viewed with a virtual HDD, how is that actually done?[/quote:lgrk46er]
After searching through the settings, there doesn't appear to be any way to do that via the BDlot software itself. This from the home page:
<quote>
[i:lgrk46er]BDlot DVD Clone Ultimate provides built-in virtual DVD drive that allows you to load and unload any ISO image file unlimitedly, and makes it possible for you to play them conveniently. Supporting ISO image file as system discs is another advantage over other peer products. coming soon[/i:lgrk46er]. <end quote>
Note the "coming soon" at the end. This would seem to indeed indicate the feature is not yet available but will be included in upcoming new releases. So, the only way to mount/unmount the images would be via downloading and installing virtual drive software. I personally would not bother; there are no real advantages to creating an ISO. If you wish to save full DVD contents to hard drive, just use the Video_TS option.
Cheers.....Jim
Jim,
Thanks for clearing up those loose ends.
I almost feel like an expert now compared to the complete lack of understanding I had about coping DVDs before you offered your help.
I feel confident I will be able to handle any DVD copying now because of your clear explanation about the process.
Thanks a million!
