Hey All - Hope you can help. I am running Vista Home Premium with the free Avast AV. All of a sudden I am getting no audio notifications from the Avast program. All sound/audio settings are okay...none muted, all set to 86. All other sound is also okay, music, Windows notifications everything working as normal. I have accessed the sounds menu via right click on speaker icon in the system tray and re-applied all the various sounds to Avast...no go. Yet, if I navigate to the Avast program file folder and access the sounds in sub folder 'English' they will all play okay from there.
I have checked Avast settings under sound and the check box to 'Disable avast! sounds' is cleared...no tick.
So, the sounds are playing okay from their original location...they are set correctly in the 'sounds' menu but will not play. It would appear something which links between the sounds menu and actual files is broken??
It is no biggy but I [i:3u77m02h]do[/i:3u77m02h] miss the polite gentleman informing me that the definitions have been updated...
Any assistance would be most appreciated,

I've never used Avast, but a couple things to try:
Go tot he setting in Avast that says disable sounds and check the box. Hit Apply (or OK) then go back in and clear it again. Hit Apply and/or OK. Sometimes Windows will save a setting incorrectly even if it shows a certain way (I had the problem with showing the little speaker icon in my system tray for a while).
Another thing to try is to see if Avast has placed it's sound notifications in the Windows Sound Control Panel applet. It's possible the sounds got cleared out of there (unlikely, but it never hurts to check).
A worst case scenario would be to re-install the software. Though if it's a preference that got set somewhere, sometimes reinstallation will retain your previous settings.

Hey Ziggie - Thanks for the reply mate. I have done that (disabled Avast sounds and then hit okay..then enabled them again), I did it a couple of times...no go. All the Avast sound settings appear in the sound applet and are associated with the correct files (little speaker icons next to each one). I disabled each one individually and then re-applied them via the browse button and navigating to Avast's program file folder and then sub folder 'English' (which is where the Avast audio files are located)....still no go.
I know I could try a re-install but I am leaving that as a 'last resort'...would prefer not to.
The weird thing is that I have not installed anything new nor changed anything. I guess I could system restore back a few days and see what happens too and may try that if no solution is found...I would prefer to try and find the cause/culprit...more out of curiosity and to further my education than anything else.

I know you said you didn't add anything, but did Windows? See if any Windows Updates rolled through recently.
Otherwise...I don't know. I've never used Avast and tend to run my computers noiseless, so if sounds disappear I don't often notice.
Hopefully someone else will have some good ideas.

Zig - Thanks again for your reply. Only Windows updates have been for Defender definitions on 12/17/19th September....can't see any of them being the culprit.
I have visited the Avast forum and searched the issue....seems to be fairly common. The most used/successful solution seems to be uninstall and mailto:re-install.......@#$*%*!

Hi All - This issue has now been resolved. An apology to Zig too, I said I had not installed/changed anything recently and while that was relatively true I did install Skype about 10 days ago but didn't relate anything to that because I had thought the problem to be only a few days old......that thanks to my rotten memory (C.R.A.F.T.).
A quick system restore to just before the Skype installation and, guess what.....yep, the Avast sounds were back!
Anyway, I'm glad I persevered because now I have learned something....Skype and Avast do not play together nice...well, not in the sound department anyway.
