Tried your suggestion ozbloke....deleted the registry entry and then searched for a number of other potentially related entries (Blu Ray, free Blue, Blu Ray Ripper, etc.) and there were no results found. So, I rebooted and inserted a disc into the affected drive......
No luck, same issue. "please insert a disc" message came up.
The drive is recognized during POST, within the BIOS and in the control panel....it just wont recognize anything that's put into it.
Any other ideas?

If Vista; Go to [b:2gu8jdgs]StartDefault ProgramsChange AutoPlay Settings[/b:2gu8jdgs] and let us know which option is currently selected for each item concerning CD and DVD?
Have you tried looking into Current Control Set to see if there are any entries for either Upper or Lower Filters?
Via regedit, navigate to this key; [b:2gu8jdgs]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}[/b:2gu8jdgs]
When you have opened the last folder, if you see any entries in the right hand pane referring to either "Upperfilters" or "Lowerfilters", right click on those items and select 'Delete'.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on this particular PC. I went into the registry and deleted the Lower Filter entry (there was no entry for Upper Filter). Going back a bit towards previous posts the file that I had created in Notepad was supposed to do this upon executing it, or at least that's what I thought. When clicking it, with fingers crossed, it proved ineffective
I also removed the problematic optical drive (not that I believe there's anything wrong with it, but just want to see if this makes a difference. In its place I installed a brand new Asus SATA drive...just now need to get the appropriate cables to fire it up).
I cannot update on whether or not this will be successful, at least until I can power up the PC with the new components and recent registry changes. I will however do so once I'm able.

OK Josey....I too doubt the new drive will make any difference. Pretty sure this is a software issue.
One thing that should have been mentioned earlier; after you try these things (e.g. deleting a registry key) you should reboot the machine after each change. Sometimes the changes are not registered until a reboot.
During your search for a solution, have you visited this site?: http://support.microsoft.com/g.....e_problems
This is a "Fix it" solution from Microsoft. Notice the second item in the list of issues this will help solve; "The media in your CD or DVD drive cannot be read"
Have you tried that??

Yes, I did stumble upon that Microsoft site and unfortunately it did not help with my problem. I tried it a couple of times, but no luck....
And yes, I do typically reboot after each and every change. This issue is proving to be a real sun-of-a-bitch, but I WILL figure it out. I too doubt that the installation of a new/different optical drive will likely make no difference, but since I had one on hand I thought it was worth a shot. I don't yet have the SATA data or power cables so I can't say for certain, but we'll see.
Otherwise, still working on a solution......Thanks so much for your continued help in this matter.

That's OK Josey, I admire you for sticking with it!! Just wish we could sort it out for you.
One of the things I have been searching for across the net is a list of all the registry keys which control the behaviour of CD/DVD drives. If we could locate such a list, we could cross check all those entries on my machine to those on yours (I am also running a copy of W7 64-bit).....no luck so far!!
Did you take a look at the default AutoPlay settings? Access is the same in W7 as in Vista...[b:gk2fqf46]StartDefault ProgramsChange AutoPlay Settings.[/b:gk2fqf46] If you scroll down to the bottom of that window you will see a button to [b:gk2fqf46]Reset all defaults[/b:gk2fqf46]. Try clicking on that button and see what happens.

Okay, time for an update.....
After trying a number of different fixes, searching online for ideas, etc., I'm happy to report that I now have use of my second optical drive. HOWEVER, it likely will not point future troubleshooters towards a true solution. Let me explain.....
I removed the drive that wasn't showing up as having a disc inserted (even when there was). I then installed a new optical drive in its place. The drive that was removed was an IDE drive, whereas the new drive is SATA. Upon booting up Windows 7 Pro 64-bit recognized the new device and everything has been working flawlessly since. Before I installed the new optical drive (after I first booted up my PC I was informed that there was an update for my AnyDVD program) I updated some software that is closely tied to the Aimersoft program's functionality and operation, so now I really can't say for certain which "change" ultimately remedied my issues (or if either deserves the credit?).
I know that during my previous attempts to get my original optical drive to work like it did prior to the uninstallation of the Aimersoft program I uninstalled then reinstalled AnyDVD, thinking that might work, but it didn't. So, I'm leaning towards the fact that my replacement drive is SATA and not IDE. Obviously I could be completely off base here, but it's worth noting. I'll also add that, during my research I was often times (including from ozbloke...big thanks for your help throughout this mate!) directed towards a registry change and instructed to delete the upper and lower filters. Previous attempts didn't work (while the original drive was still installed). Now that I have my new SATA burner in place and everything appears to be working I just checked the same registry entry, and low and behold there is no mention of either upper or lower filters.
Again, at the end of the day I'm not sure what change actually resulted in resolution of my problems....I'm just happy I'm back up and running. Thanks again to all that offered assistance!

Hey Josey.....great news mate!!!!!
My guess would be (and only guessing) this was most likely a registry issue after all. Connecting the new SATA CD/DVD drive required a very different and new driver be installed. Installation of that new driver would have also updated values for any registry entries associated with the new CD/DVD drive.
Anyway, glad it is now fixed....and well done you for hanging in there to a successful conclusion!!

Just out of curiosity, do you think that if I were to now remove the new SATA drive and replace it with the old IDE drive, it may now work? Not that I'm going to, I'm just curious. The bummer is that the Pioneer IDE drive is only about a year old and had served me well, that's all....kinda feel bad for it (is that weird... since it wasn't its fault it was replaced?)...

Yes, I think it probably more then likely would work OK but if it was me, now everything is fully operational again, I wouldn't be risking it. (OK, call me chicken )

Yes mate, that is definitely weird.....just a tad!! LOL
Keep it as a spare?? Actually I'm surprised to hear it is just 12 months old, haven't been able to get new IDE drives here for much longer than that. SATA's been all the rage for ages now.
