I am running Win 7 and backing up to an external USB drive using ATIH version 11 which I purchased from Acronis. The recovery CD I made of the system doesn't seem to work when I try to test it. After starting the recovery disc in my DVD drive should I not be presented with the GUI to complete the testing. I don't want to wait for a Hard Drive failure and hope that I will be able to recover my system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Georget - You will need to actually boot your computer from the recovery disc. The recovery disc is primarily for disaster recovery, to be used when you are unable to boot the operating system.

Put the recovery disc in the CD/DVD drive, wait until the system has recognized the disc and then restart the machine. If the BIOS is set to boot from CD/DVD first, then you should get a message on a black screen saying "Booting from CD" or something similar (you may or may not get that message, depends on which BIOS system the computer is using). You will definitely get the message "Starting Acronis Loader...". Don't press any keys, just let it run along and you should end up with a screen displaying a number of options, including "Acronis True Image Home (Full Version)". That option may already be highlighted but if it isn't, use the up and down arrow keys to highlight it and then press the Enter key ([b:20e0dis4]do not use the mouse at this stage[/b:20e0dis4]). After selecting the "Acronis True Image Home (Full Version)" option your should soon be presented with the working GUI which you can then navigate using the mouse.

Now if, after inserting the CD and then restarting, your computer just boots the operating system as per normal then you will need to change the boot preference/order settings in BIOS. Report back if that happens and we can guide you through that process.

HTH,
Cheers....Jim

That is one of the most refreshing things I heard in a very long time! Someone looking ahead... Before disaster strikes!

Look around for Disk Backup Options and be sure that Validation is turned on for every backup.

Thank you for your help with my dilemma Jim, it's much easier when taken by the hand! I changed the Boot order in the BIOS and everything fell into place as per your instructions. Thanks again.
