Could someone explain what the Windows Meltdown and Spectra attack is about? Got an email about this, this morning and am not for sure if it is fake or a scam.

Relax is the general rule. Check out the link below, but it mainly deals with a flaw in some chips that can expose a computer no matter what protection one uses. https://www.computerworld.com/article/3245788/microsoft-windows/windows-meltdown-and-spectre-keep-calm-and-carry-on.html , Mindblower!

Thanks Mindblower. Might be adding a Linux VM to my W10 later on.

dandl. What processor made do you have? If it's AMD, you're safe, from what I've read. Seems it's the Intel brand which has the flaw, and partner M$ is in rescue mode. I'm not convinced any operating is safer if it is a chip problem, since it can bypass prior to starting said o/s, Mindblower!

I am running an Intel i5 3570. Yea, that is also what I am reading and it doesn't seem like MS will even try and patch any other O/S other than W10. This all seems rather suspicious to me. Not sure if Intel, AMD or MS can be trusted, and if this is CPU related then why doesn't Intel release a patch for their affected processors? Daniel.

The more you read about this problem, the deeper you fall down the rabbit hole. People are using old computers, and each year there could be several new chips. Patching that many chips, posses an extraordinary problem. Beside, this discovery is still in the lab, not out in the real world, or is it? And is AMD immune? Scary world we live in, where chip access might go undetected, bypass software, and invite us into Big Brother is Watching over You, Mindblower!

You can bet if a couple of nerds from Google can find this CPU flaw then someone else is just waiting. This whole thing with Meltdown and Spectra will eventually bite someone.

These are the results I get after running Windows Powershell using the powershell script obtained from Microsoft.

BTI HardwarePresent = False
BTI WindowsSupportPresent = True
BTI WindowsSupportEnabled = False
BTI DisableBySystemPolicy = False
BTI DisableByNoHardwareSupport = True
KVA ShadowRequired = True
KVA ShadowWindowsSupportPresent = True
KVA ShadowWindowsSupportEnabled = True
KVA ShadowPcidEnabled = False

This is for CVE-2017-5715 (Branch Target Injection) and CVE-2017-5754 (Rogue Data Cache Load)
