Have an old, OK very old, CRT TV with a resolution of 640 x 480 which I would like to hook up to wife's HP Compaq Presario CQ62 running Win7 Home OS so she can watch non-cable TV programming. Connected CRT and laptop using VGA and audio cable. After making what I believe are correct settings on both CRT and laptop to mirror the desktop, what is showing on the CRT is 4 distorted Windows logos on a blue field. Lowest resolution setting for the monitor on the laptop configuration appears to be 800 x 640.
Is this inability to set a lower monitor resolution the cause of the problem?...or something else?
Thanks in advance.

That's it. Analog CRTs don't handle non-native resolutions well at all.

The only real solution is a cheap LCD monitor or TV. Not what you wanted to hear, but it's the most cost effective solution.

Thanks, Dave.
Yeah, got that right but do hate to throw out the baby... Since CRT IS in use currently with connection to AV receiver via component video, need to figure out if there is a way to connect laptop to receiver and use it as portal to CRT. Unfortunately, laptop also is not SOTA so it does not have HDMI output.
