I've heard good things about the Haugppage pvr500 capture card - [url:1aa3tno8]http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_pvr500mce.html[/url:1aa3tno8].[/quote:1aa3tno8]

I see that one has analog tuners, which would require a converter come February. (I'm looking to drop down to antennae)

Maybe this one instead? The Haugppage hvr 1600? http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products ... r1600.html

Hi Dave - Yes, that's what I thought but the specs say "Integrated Graphics" and I definitely have only two cards installed, one for modem/phone line in (which came with the computer) and a TPLink wireless PCI card which I installed so it could be connected to the internet wirelessly.......strange.
Why would there be any memory at all allocated for 'onboard ' video if it had a dedicated card? Would that be some sort of overflow provision?
Me no comprendez......lol

cheers,
JIM

OK, that makes a little more sense. The integrated graphics is using the PCI bus. But still 128mb should handle Vista's eye candy just fine.

Sorry about that. That's what came to mind after I heard "tuner card". Man, I wish I had a PC with media center in my living room! I don't think it will fly with the wife, but it would be cool. Media Center is the only aspect of XP or Vista I haven't had the opportunity to play with.

About as close as I can come is streaming dvd, video, and music from my home server to the xbox360, which is very cool I might add!

BTW, the new WHS parts showed up on Tuesday from Newegg. It's up and running. Beats the heck out of the old Dell desktop I was using. Hopefully the 2GB RAM will let me play with some additional addins.

Well this project all came about when we decided to drop our Satellite service and switch over to antenna to save money.

But we're not sure we can live without DVR/PVR functionality that our Satellite service conveniently provided with our service.

Then we got to thinking, if recording one show is good, two is better. (I was aiming for four tuners, one for each broadcast network, but my wife overruled me).

And so I'm converting my old gaming computer (yes, it used to be for gaming) into a Media Center Box. I'm looking at Media Center 2005 as the OS to run.

Aight, I'm off to spend some money now.

Go ahead and get 4 Zig. She'll never know, and your secret is safe with us! Sometimes our wives just don't understand our technology "needs".

LoL.

Somehow I get the feeling that dropping extra tuner cards in a Media Center hardly constitutes as a need.

Then there's the unfortunate part that Media Center only supports two tuners, so I'd need two computers to do the recording, and she might notice that...

unless....i could mount a motherboard on each side of the case....

Zig,

All in the spirit of accomplishing this task in a manner that your wife doesn't notice... Vista Ultimate supports 4 tuners! Only one case. Only one mobo. Much easier to hide!

Yes, but imagine the coolness factor if I mount two mother boards in a case. Multiple processors running simultaneously, side by side!! Plus, using my ingeniousness, I'd figure out how to do it all with one video output!

right, or Vista Ultimate.

Whichever.

Of course, now that we talked about this here, I can't let my wife ever find this site. Or her family....or anyone who knows her.

On second thought, probably shouldn't hide things from my wife.

Well...

I bought the Hauppage 1600 card...and discovered that it doesn't work with Windows Media Edition.

So...anyone with experience in all this, should I bother returning the card and getting an MCE compatible card, or should I use Win TV, which came with the card, in place of Media Center?

Le sigh. I knew this would be tough, but I didn't realilze it would be this tough.

Zig,

Check out SageTV[/url:3v6azjn2]($80) and MythTV[/url:3v6azjn2](free) if you find the included software doesn't do what you want.
