Hello.

I am thinking of hooking up my computer to a monitor via dvi cable and to a television via hdmi cable.

Now I have several questions.

If, I play a hi def movie from the computer, will it show on both at the same time?

If so, can I make it play just on the television without shutting off the monitor or unplugging the dvi cable so that something else can be done on the monitor at the same time?

Also can I mute the television and listen to the movie from my computer speakers?

In addition to answering these questions, can you suggest anything else I should be considering? Or even if this is a dumb idea.

Thanks

Hey Doc - This reply is actually coming from Richard Pedersen who for some reason wasn't able to access the forum - we're working on sorting that out.

Anyway, Richard sent his response to me by email so I could relay it, this is his advice:

Dr Denby,

Let me begin by saying in no uncertain terms that I am not an expert on this subject, but I'll give it my best shot.

DVI only carries a video signal. HDMI carries both audio and video. If you use the HDMI for your TV, you should be able to mute it.

Here's what I'm guessing and it's only a guess; I've never done this myself.

Run the cables and mute the TV. You should be able to get the video on the TV, hear it through your computer speakers, and run a program over the top of it.

This all presumes you have the computer power and graphics capabilities to accomplish this without a lot of lag and stuttering while running your program.

Scott Wilkinson, of TWiT fame, is the master when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Here's a link to his podcast: http://twit.tv/show/home-theater-geeks/202"
This will bring you to the latest episode (#202), but you can see all the archived episodes or search the site (show notes?) for your particular topic. I'm sure it has been covered somewhere.

I hope this helps and that I wasn't totally off-base,
Richard

Thanks Jim and Richard.

I did have a look at the site and I tried to find answers but I was either doing it wrong or they were not addressed.

I have not bought the television yet, so I am trying to find out as much as possible first.

How do I know if I have enough power? Is a 600wt power supply enough? I am running a soundblaster xtreme audio, GeForce GT 610 1GB 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card, a primary hard drive, a couple storage hard drives, and a 22" monitor.

Do you think I am ok with this?

A 600 WATT PSU sounds adequate to me Doc. So yes, I do believe you'll be okay.
