No matter how secure we believe we are, (downloading the latest updates, patches, etc...), if you're computer is not connected to a UPS, you could be at great risk. If you say WHAT?, or consider this simply not true, allow me you ask you if you've ever seen these words before ( don't turn off your computer ) while installing updates? Even a slight power interruption can cause you problems. We rely on electricy, as do most of our devices. Without it, we're in the primitive age, so to prevent your computer any more problems (than normal), I urge everyone to purchase and install a UPS asap, Mindblower!

Preaching to the choir, Mindblower.

Although most computers in the DCT NOC are now laptops I do run a pretty serious server, which is backed up by a UPS that can power down the server in the event of an outage and before the UPS itself shuts down due to battery limitations.

David. Sincerely hope I'm preaching to the choir, when it concerns to you and your team. It's the members who read and follow the newsletter, who have yet to use and rely on an UPS (Unlimited Power Supply - though it does have limits, such as running time), and/or faced a problem when an update took place while the power was mysteriously cut (went down). Trying a restart later, once the power came back on, might cause the computer to hang, go into a restart loop, etc.

Maybe some additional words from the team can help guide members. Thank you, Mindblower!

Hi Mindblower
This is my input on a UPS. If a user runs a desktop PC or some kind of server 24/7 then a UPS would probably be a good investment. I personally turn my PC off when not in use and it might be on for 4 to 6 hours daily. Yes, I have had to deal with my fair share of power surges or just plain old power outages, while in the middle of doing something. So let me be the last one to say a UPS isn't needed, if nothing else it will isolate the PC from the already mentioned power surges.
