Two days ago, I helped a friend to set up OneDrive on her two Macs, a desktop (iMac) and a laptop (MacBook Air). Initially, everything worked OK. Now, however, the OneDrive app will not open on either Mac. Can anyone suggest what to do about this?
Here's the full story.
My friend is using the latest version of OSX, Yosemite, on both computers. When we first set it up, everything worked well. We installed the OneDrive app on the desktop, set up the OneDrive folder and she moved several files into that folder. Then we installed the OneDrive app on the laptop, set up the OneDrive folder there and presto! - all the files she had put into OneDrive on the desktop now appeared in the OneDrive folder on the laptop.
Yesterday, she called me and said that a new file she had created and put into the OneDrive folder on the desktop was not showing up on the laptop. Investigating this with her over the phone, we determined that the OneDrive app was not opening on either computer. If it wasn't open, no syncing would happen. The app is still apparently there in her applications folder, but clicking on it does nothing. By right-clicking on the app in the Applications folder, she was able to set some options (open on login, keep in Dock) and she rebooted the laptop. The app did not open automatically as it should have and clicking on it still would not start it.
Any suggestions?
Incidentally, I have been using Microsoft's OneDrive for some time now and it works well on several devices, including my Mac, so I know it does work on a Mac.
Hi PT,
What I know about Macs could be written on a postage stamp... sorry.
However, from what you've told us so far, I would suspect that the file your friend created and put into the OneDrive folder might have something to do with it. If OneDrive was working fine up until then but not after, that would seem logical.
Do you have details of the new file - file name, type, extension, etc.? That may provide a clue.
I've referred your question to our Mac expert Judy but, with OneDrive involved, I'm not sure she'll be able to help. Your best bet might be a dedicated Mac forum.
Cheers... Jim
Thanks for the prompt response, Jim. I don't think this has anything to do with the file type, for two reasons. First, she created this new file on her desktop, but the OneDrive app is not opening on either device, including her laptop, which has not yet seen the new file. Second, the new file is just a new version of one of the files (a Word document) that is already in the OneDrive folder, so nothing new there.
I have explored this on the Microsoft Support site, even getting into a chat with one of their "experts" who I think was just looking up the same pages on their site that I had already found. These were not helpful, but he suggested what you might expect - uninstall and then reinstall the app. Still doesn't explain what caused the problem, but I guess I'll help my friend through that process, keeping my fingers crossed that the same problem doesn't recur.
Cheers,
Patrick
