The End of an Era?
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has dominated desktop browser market share for many years, mainly because it’s simply just there. Let’s face it, any browser which is built-in to the operating system has a decided head start on 3rd party browsers. However, that situation appears to be rapidly coming to an end as Google’s Chrome browser steadily makes ground on Internet Explorer.
Let’s look at the desktop browser market share trend over the preceding 10 months (as per NetMarketShare):
The differential between April 2015 to February 2016 in near enough to: Chrome +11%, Internet Explorer -11%. Which works out at an average swing of a little over 1% per month. If we then extrapolate that rate per month we can quite confidently predict that Chrome will overtake Internet Explorer as #1 desktop browser by around October this year. However, historically, these types of trends tend to accelerate as the disparity narrows so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the big event didn’t happen even earlier – perhaps as early as June or July.
When you think about it, Google seems to outdo Microsoft in most mutual endeavors. One can only surmise that the brains trust at Google is either a lot smarter than Microsoft’s equivalent, or more in tune with the users, or perhaps both. I wonder if Google has ever considered producing a full-blown desktop operating system? I seriously doubt Google would want to do battle in a field where Microsoft has traditionally dominated but, you never know.
As a side note: Even though Firefox hasn’t really lost any significant ground over the past 11 months, it’s disappointing to see the once popular browser as a comparative non-entity in the battle for supremacy.
Here on Linux “Mozilla” is still the KING.
Honestly don’t know what the appeal is for Chrome. Still believe Firefox and Waterfox are superior, Mindblower!
I tend to agree, Mindblower.
Don’t forget about our low population at Palemoon, as well.
Win 10 is NOT friendly to Internet Explorer in fact it is garbage with the two !!
Thank God for Google Chrome!!
could that because of IE11 is being replaced by it’s child “Edge”? I see Edge all over the group policy (heck I still Windows XP crap in there) of windows 10. One can’t even turn off edge, for it is so built in. And yes, I know IE is the grand daddy of Edge.
I still use win 7 with IE11 for 50% of something’s and Firefox the other 50% of something’s, just quite made the total switch yet, but it bugs the heck out of me that I can’t totality remove IE or Edge from either win 7 or win 10. I sure wished in the US our government was for the people like it is in the E.U. and pass similar laws to force a non-IE version of windows.
Have windows 10 installed and Firefox is my go to browser hands down.have and OT question regarding Windows 10 my biggest beef is sometime having a problem on Windows 10 whenever I google said problem answers are always coming from people who have downloaded Windows 10 and not from people who already have Windows 10 installed.
From simply a users point of view, IE works for some things and chrome for others. Customizing is a pain in the neck and a necessary inconvenience with most browsers I’ve tried. I’d like a browser that goes where I send it when I send it and plays any kind of media and opens any kind of file without jumping through hoops. Te consumer doesnt want to choose what advertising he wants to see. He doesn’t want to see ANY advertising, any popups and cleans up after itself when the session is over. A browser used to be the users tool. Now it’s the advertisers tool. Browsers suck that way.
So fed up with Windows OS 10, it’s inability to work well with others as in touch screens require larger$ CPU, and three year obsolescence of PC’s Iswitched to MAC. Having done so, I recommend waiting and acquiring iPad PRO or Air 3 if it is going to be called that. Happy I switched, but could have saved a few $ by waiting. Still use FFox. JMO
Bill, what do Windows 10, touchscreens, CPU’s, and Macs have to do with Chrome browser’s market share?
I love Chrome. I never like IE. Although the new Edge has some cool features. I love cars with lots of chrome on them and I love Google Chrome!
