I must admit, I’d never heard of the Linux distro CachyOS until it was mentioned to me by a good friend who recently installed it alongside Windows in a dual-boot system.
When I asked my friend why he chose CachyOS, he replied that it is currently the most popular Linux distro on the planet, as per the respected DistroWatch:

- 2022: Didn’t make top 125
- 2023: 30th
- 2024: 9th
- 2025: Been Number 1 since
So, not only is CachyOS currently the number one distro, but apparently, it has been for some time. I need to get out more. It’s no mean feat to not only overtake the likes of Mint and Ubuntu in the popularity stakes but also to maintain that lead over an extended period of time.
CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux that focuses on speed and security optimizations, with an emphasis on speed.
Pretty much all of the description on CachyOS’s home page uses that awful Linux jargon, which is, for most people, including myself, largely indecipherable. I wish the Linux developers would wake up to the fact that, when catering for comparatively new Linux converts, plain English will sit far better with most than what, for the uninitiated, appears to be a heap of mumbo jumbo.
Those who understand the jargon are converts already, so in my opinion, some new thinking is required there.
Say what???
The CachyOS download weighs in at 3.069GB, which is slightly under the average for a Linux distro. I haven’t tested CachyOS as yet, but I am planning to very soon and will get back with my thoughts in a follow-up article.
