Watch Two Stars Collide? Or Not

There was a prediction for two stars in a binary system to collide and form a massive explosion, a Red Nova. A star called KIC 9832227 in the constellation Cygnus located about 1,940 ± 30 light-years away. A YouTube channel called THEREALPAX has a live video of a telescope viewing this star. Up since May 16, 2022.

You can view that video here: LIVE Kic98322227 Supernova Merge & Explosion IS HAPPENING

Unfortunately, further research seems to indicate that the prediction was based on faulty data. Translation, it might not happen this year as predicted.

Two Stars Won’t Collide Into A Red Nova In 2022

I like to check in on it every now and then. It did turn from two yellow stars to two red ones. I don’t know if this means anything or whether it was a technical glitch.

So if you have the time to spare, it’ll probably be like watching grass grow in space :-), at least until the data is recalculated and we are given a new potential date for collision. By the way, ignore the prediction countdown timer in the lower right corner of the video. It resets every 30 minutes.

  1. After doing some research into this YouTube user I have my doubts about the live feed. With all the video editing and effects out there these days it begs the question about whether or not a filter is being used to drastically change the color to keep views high. Just a thought…

  2. Seeing as this binary system’s orbital period is listed as 0.428 days (pretty much twice a day) while the livestream shows these stars orbiting around every few minutes either means that this livestream isn’t being very honest or that this information is grossly out of date.
