Following the success of Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, it was announced over the weekend that three more remastered games will be released in February 2025. The games include Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000), and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003). Although it was widely hoped that they would be remastered, the announcement came out of the blue and was a very pleasant surprise. I’ve played all three of the original games over the years, but I’m not sure if I finished them because the first three were definitely my favourites. In fact, I have them on the original CDs, in my Steam library, and on GOG. For simplicity’s sake, I shall refer to them as follows, TLR, TRC, and TRAOD.
I can see both TLR and TRC being remastered fairly easily and they will probably look as stunning as the previous remasters. But TRAOD presents a challenge because it was made by Core Design using a revised game engine, with mouse control over Lara for the first time and the result was a disaster. In fact, many mods are available to improve the controls in the original game, one of which I tried yesterday, but the movement remained as bad as ever, with poor Lara falling all over the place, or dying through no fault of her own.
TRAOD was the last game from Core Design before the company disappeared. Later games were made by Crystal Dynamics, namely Tomb Raider: Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld. It apparently was a rushed affair, with Eidos, the parent company, pressurising the team at Core Design with hideous deadlines. This would explain the state of the game when it was finally released.
In short, I’m looking forward to these new remasters, now dubbed, The Darkness Trilogy, and more than anything to see how the controls in TRAOD will be improved.
You can pre-order the remasters on Steam.
