Search for a Specific Field in your Word Document

I received an e-mail recently asking me how to search a document for a specific field.  As it turns out, it isn’t all that difficult to do!

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. Be certain the field codes are visible in your document.  If they are not, simply click Alt + F9 and they will be displayed.
  2. Click CTRL + F to display the Find and Replace dialog box.
  3. Be certain that the Find tab is displayed.
  4. In the Find What box, key in either ^d or ^19, which is the code to find the opening field brace.
  5. Key in a space followed by the field name.
  6. Click the More button if it is available to you.
  7. Be certain no formatting is being searched for and that no other check boxes are selected.
  8. Click on Find Next.

( i.e., ^d DATE ) will find the date field for you.

Searching in version 2010 of MS rod is a bit different but, just as easy, if not easier:

Follow these steps:

  1. Be certain field codes are visible in your document.  If they are not, simply click Alt + F9 and they will be displayed.
  2. Click Ctrl + F9 to display the Navigation pane on the left-hand side of your document.
  3. Int he box at the top of the pane, key in either ^d or ^19, which is the code to find the opening field brace.
  4. Key in a space followed by the field name, as above.
  5. Your Navigation pane should show all the matches for the field of your choice.
  6. Click the one you want and Word will move directly to that location in your document.
