Over the years I’ve always owned a multi-function inkjet color printer with a preference for the Epson brand. However, I got sick and tired of continually forking out for replacement ink cartridges which, more often than not, cost more than the printer itself.
So, when my latest Epson multi-function inkjet printer started playing up, I decided to look into the monochrome multi-function laser printers. I print mostly in black and white anyway so it seemed like a good plan, anything to avoid the ongoing and all too frequent outlay for those exorbitantly priced replacement ink cartridges.

Pantum Mono Multi-Function Laser Printer
I looked into all popular brands and during my search came across the Pantum brand, which I’d never previously heard of. Many of the name brands, and particularly Brother, garnered plenty of favorable user reviews but, in the end, price played a major role in my decision and I decided to take a punt on the less expensive Pantum.

I must admit I had my concerns buying a brand I’d never heard of but I’ve owned that printer for almost two years now and never experienced any sort of problem. Plus, I’m still using the original toner cartridge that came with it – yes!! Any concerns well and truly put to rest.
I paid a little under $200.00AU for the Pantum and consider it one of the best investments I’ve ever made. It’s so reliable, never missed a beat, and print quality is always top-notch. Highly recommended.
This article is specifically meant to help others who might not have heard of the Pantum brand. However, the overall message is, unless you specifically need color printing, dump those ink-guzzling inkjet printers and get yourself a mono multi-function laser printer.

Hi Jim. Looks like a very good Multi-Function Laser Printer. I have been using my Brother Multi-Function Laser Printer for many years. Just today, I replaced my toner cartridge with a brand one. In the past I swapped cartridges, so I happy to received a re-furbished unit at a lower price. But now the prices have been slashed down that new units are the only option. Do not print much, as 500 sheets lasts me several years. Will consider replace my Brother should it stop working. Nice article btw, Mindblower!

As mentioned in the article, Brother mono multi-function printers do receive much praise. I just regret that it took me so long to wake up to the fact that these mono laser printers are the way to go.

I have no firsthand experience with color laser printers at all, sorry.
What I can suggest is that you look at printers within your budget range and then check user reviews. User reviews will generally present fair and impartial opinions.
I have an OKI C330dn color laser printer. I have had it for 13 years and it’s still going strong. Color toners are pricey, but they last a long time unlike ink cartridges. I have only replaced them once. Color lasers aren’t photo quality like inkjets, but for documents with color elements they are great.
Pantium or Pantum?
Well, that’s embarrassing. You are correct Frank, it’s a “Pantum”. Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll edit the article accordingly.

Great article! I dumped my inkjet printers several years ago. Started with a Samsung monochrome ML 2165 which has a manual double side function. I get between 1500 and 1800 copies per cartridge. I was then gifted a Canon MF3200 series 4 in 1 printer that only needed a replacement toner cartridge. Both have been reliable and the Canon produces over 2500 images per cartridge. I order compatible replacements rather than OEM as they work as good and cost 1/3 (or less} than the manufacturer product. They get delivered from the warehouse with a week.
Cheers Edward. Yes, I regret not having made the move from inkjet to laser earlier. After two years usage I’m still using the original toner cartridge so I’m already dollars ahead.
An interesting fact I discovered, the company 123ink that I use to replace toner cartridges is also Pantum’s exclusive Canadian distributor. They are available through Amazon too, at a slightly higher price.
A similar situation here (in Australia) Edward. A local supplier called InkStation is the main distributor and Amazon.au also sell the Pantum brand but at a slightly higher price.
In fact, Amazon.au has been disappointing, everything there seems to be slightly more expensive.
