Mastering Word Count: Unveiling The Art Of Character Counting

If you know the word and character counts in your document it can assist by helping you better understand things like the readability of your document. It can also show you how much space you are using in your document.

Perhaps you did not know it, but you can use word length and word count in a sentence to help you determine the readability of your document. Having this knowledge can also be extremely helpful when publishing and typesetting. Luckily, Word has an excellent word and character count tool that you can use!

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. The Word Count tool is located in the lower left-hand side of your Status Bar in Word. The Status Bar is at the bottom of your document window.
  2. By default, Word Count is set to display the word count in your document. It can also keep track of several other statistics. To see those statistics, simply click on the word count and the Word Count window will open. You can also find the Word Count window on your Review tab.

The Word Count window will display a list of statistics as seen below:

  • Pages – The number of pages comprising the document
  • Words – A count of how many words are in your document
  • Characters – A count of the characters in your document, which includes punctuation (including spaces)
  • Paragraphs – A count of paragraphs in your document
  • Lines – A count of lines in your document, which also includes lines with no text
