My son was watching videos on TikTok recently (no surprise) and started getting annoyed that the closed captions were on and in the way. Not sure why that bothered him but I stepped in to help figure out how to turn them off. This brought to mind an article I wrote a little over a month ago about doing this on YouTube. You can see that article here:
How To Turn On/Off Captions On YouTube App
This time, we will show you how you can turn this feature on or off on the TikTok app. The captions can be helpful when you are trying to watch videos and not bother others in the house with sound. But it also can be annoying (ask my son) if they are on and getting in the way of the video. Since my kid and I figured it out, I will now share this new knowledge with all of you. Before we jump into this, please check out these other articles I have written about TikTok:

Since that is out of the way, it is time to pull out those devices and get this class started.
How To Turn On/Off TikTok Captions
We will show you how to do this on my Motorola Edge phone using the TikTok app. There are two ways to do this – the long way and the quick way so I will give you both since I think it is important to know both.
The Long Way
Step 1: Find the app on your device and tap it.
Step 2: Once on the app, look to the bottom right and tap your Profile link.
Step 3: On your Profile screen look to the top right and tap the 3 horizontal lines.
Step 4: A menu will appear at the bottom of the screen. Find the Settings and privacy option. Tap it.
Step 5: On this screen, look for the section called Content & Display. At the bottom of this section find Accessibility. Tap it.
Step 6: Here is where the Caption control is.
Posts you watch will show captions when available.
Tap the switch to the right of captions to turn it on or off. DONE!
Now that you know the normal way to switch it off or on, time to show you how to do this the quick way,
The Quick Way
Step 1: On the video you are watching with the captions, you will want to tap the Arrow icon on the right near the bottom.
Step 2: Once you do that, you will see some options. Look for the Turn Off Captions (this will say Turn on if it is already off) and tap it. This option will work for all videos so you don’t even have to go all the way into your settings. DONE!
Now you know two ways to turn on or off the captions on TikTok.
