How To Restore Previous Document Versions In Word 365

I don’t know about you, but this has happened to me on more than one occasion. You are working on a document and you are almost finished, and then you take another look at it and realize one of the prior versions was actually better. Oh no! What do you do now? Well, if like me, you are a subscriber of Office 365, you can restore previous versions.

There is a caveat and that is to utilize the restore feature, you will have to save your document on Microsoft OneDrive. You will find that as a Microsoft 365 subscriber, you will have all the room you need because each account comes with 1TB of online storage and Microsoft Word will automatically save your document as you make changes.

The other caveat is that you must save your documents correctly in the first place,  and we do this by utilizing the AutoSave feature. Doing so means that your documents will be saved in real-time to your Microsoft OneDrive.

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. Select File | Options.
    Click Save.
  2. Check AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default on Word.
    Choose OK to exit.
  3. Restart Word.

Ok, now we can move on to restoring a previous version.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Open the document you would like to restore.
  2. Click the file name at the top middle of your document; it will be marked as [File Name] saved.
  3. Select Version History.

  1. With your document open, select File.
  2. Select Info | Version History.

Either method you use, the end result will be you will now see a listing of restored versions of your document in the right-hand pane. Each one will be organized by date, starting with the newer versions at the top of the list.

Click to open a previous version. Older documents have a save date and time next to the document name above.

As far as I am concerned this, right here, is plenty of reason to subscribe to Microsoft Office 365!
