How To Remove Manually Applied Character Formatting II

This is a follow-up to a previous post on this subject. And I think you will find it interesting but you have to have read the previous post so that it will make sense to you. This will be the third method to achieve your goal and it requires resetting the background shading to no color.

Follow the steps below to learn how:

If you used Method 2, which was covered in the previous post, then you will also need to get rid of the shading.

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. Select your entire document using the shortcut CTRL + A.
  2. On your  Home tab on your Ribbon, in the Paragraph group, click the drop-down arrow to the right of the borders and shading icon.
  3. Select Borders and Shading.
  4. Select the Shading tab.
  5. Change the Fill to No Color.
  6. Click OK.

The next method requires using a wildcard find and replace to reset the character formatting. This will not change your shading.

Follow the steps below to learn how.

Caveat: Test this technique on a COPY of the document as it makes a global Replace All change:

  1. Press CTRL + H to open Find and Replace.
  2. Click More.
  3. Select Use Wildcards.
  4. In Find What, key in an asterisk (*) (* = every character).
  5. Place your cursor in the Replace With field, and click the Format button at the bottom of the window. Do not key in anything in this field.
  6. Select Font to open the font dialog.
  7. Set the font color to Automatic, the font style to Regular, and the font size to your liking.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Below the Replace With field, you should see information regarding the font (i.e., font size, not bold, not italic, font color = Auto).
  10. Click Replace All.

You must click Replace All because if you use just Replace Find, every single character in your document will be replaced one at a time.
