How To Delete Gmail Emails

I don’t know about you but I am very lackadaisical when it comes to getting rid of email in my Gmail account.  Why?  Gosh, I really do not know! I will look at something and think, “Well, I don’t have time for this now but I will come back to it when I do”. You guessed it! I never get around to getting back to it. And then the amount of email grows and grows until one of my grandchildren says, “Mom-mom, that cannot be right! Do you really have that many emails in there???” So I finally got to the point that I had to rid myself of all those silly emails. I am way too embarrassed to tell you what the number was, but I have vowed (for the second time I might add) that I will NOT let it pile up like this again!

So for those of you, like me, who let your email get to grotesque portions, I will now tell you how to rid yourself of all those emails!

Follow the steps below to learn how:

To delete all emails in Gmail that are older than one year, you can use the search bar to filter your emails and then select and delete them in bulk.

  1. Open Gmail and key in older_than:1y in the search bar.
  2. Press Enter
  3. Click the checkbox at the top left to select all your emails.

You can also set up a filter to automatically delete old emails:

  1. Click the Show search option button which is located to the right of the Search bar.
  2. In the Has the words field, enter the search terms you would like to use.
  3. Click Create filter.
  4. In the next menu, click the checkbox next to Delete it.

I would be remiss if I did not tell you that I had a great feeling of a weight being lifted off my shoulders once I had completed cleaning out all my very old emails!

  1. I have used gmail for over 20 years.
I have a clean inbox and always delete read email.
I also empty the trash folder all the time.
If I do a search for an old email, I will get results from years ago on emails that I thought were trashed and gone.
It seems google retains all of my deleted emails.
Is it just me or is this how it is?

  2. Does this method also delete emails that I put in a different “Label/Folder”? I would like to delete emails in the inbox using this method, but not want to delete emails more than a year old I have moved to another Label.

How do you perform this same deletion task of emails on the free “Outlook on the Web?”
