How To Check For Software Updates On Android

Recently I was working on a computer and wanted to make sure that it was up to date. It is very important to have all the updates installed for security and stability reasons. It is no different for your mobile devices and should be updated when needed.  In this article, I want to go over how you can check for updates to your Android phone. Now that you have all that new knowledge let us get into this.

How To Check For Software Updates – Android

I will be showing you this process using Motorola Edge and Samsung Galaxy S22 Android phones. Let us start with the Edge.

Motorola Edge Android Phone

Step 1: Once on your Android device, go to the Settings screen. On this phone, swipe down from the top twice and tap on the gear icon at the bottom.

Step 2: On the Settings screen, find the System updates option. Tap it.

Step 3: Here is the main screen for your System update options. At the top, under the phone icon, it will show which software update you are currently on. Under that, they give a few options to look at:

• Check for updates
• Smart Updates
• Why updates matter
• Update history

In this article, we will go over the first two and the last one. Let us start with the top option. Tap on Check for Updates.

Step 4: Once you do that, your phone will check for any new updates and install them. When it finds an update, it may ask you to restart your phone so it can be installed. Follow the prompts and finish the installation. Done!  If you want to get back to the other options, you can tap your back button or tap the gear Icon at the top right. Moving on to the next option which is Smart updates.

Step 5: With this option, you are given a switch to the right to turn it on or off.

Updates are downloaded and installed automatically when you’re connected to Wi-Fi

After tapping the switch on the right, you will get a warning window with two options.

Here you are offered two easy questions: Turn it off or Keep it on. I like having this setting on since it takes care of the updates for me. 

Step 6: The last one on here I want to go over is the Update history option at the bottom of the list. Tap it and you will get a list of all the Updates that your phone has had. This helps when troubleshooting issues that an update might have caused. DONE!

That is how you can check your phone updates on the Motorola Edge phone.

Now that we know how to do this on the Motorola Edge, let’s move over to the Samsung Galaxy S22.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Android Phone

Step 1: On my wife’s Samsung phone you will want to swipe down from the top to find the Settings(Gear) option. Tap it.

Step 2: On the Settings screen, scroll down until you find the Software update option. Tap it.

Step 3: Here is where we will be able to find our Software Updates. As on the other phone, you will be given some options:

• Download and Install (under this it tells you when it was last checked for updates)
• Auto-download over Wi-Fi (Tap the switch to turn it on or off)
• Last Updated

Let’s tap on the top option as we did before.

Step 4: Once you do this, your phone will look for updates. If you are all up to date, you will get a screen showing the update and telling you that you are up-to-date.

Step 5: This is the last one I will be going over for this device. Tap the bottom option on your list (Last Update). A screen will appear that will show you the information on the last update that occurred on the phone. Plus, it will let you know what is new with this update. Done…
