How To Automatically Save JFIF As JPG

I wrote before about my problems with opening .jfif files with XnView, my picture viewer of choice. It still has its fits when it comes to opening .jfif and .jpeg files.

Read here: How To Fix Problems Viewing JFIF Files

Download XnView here

Normally I just rename the .jfif extension to .jpg since it is a .jpg file. I was searching for a solution to a commentator’s problem with ending up with black pictures while converting from HEIC to JPG. Read here:

How To View Convert HEIC Files

Apparently, this .jfif extension came about because of a Microsoft update. Who would have guessed – a Microsoft update screwing up the system. 🙂

If I saved a picture on Twitter, for example, it usually always defaulted to the .jfif extension. So I had to remember to change it while downloading or change it after the download; both ways were a nuisance. But I found a Registry tweak that fixes this problem.

Standard warnings, be careful editing the registry. One wrong snip … I’ll let your imagination fill in the rest. 🙂

In the search bar, type regedit

In the editor, in the Address bar, copy and paste (or type) the following and hit enter:

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

Double click on the word Extension in the right-hand pane. In the Value data box Where it says .jfif, erase that and type in .jpg

Click on OK and close the editor.

It should take effect right away, no restart is required. If you don’t want to edit the registry this way, then you can download a ready-made Registry file here:

Download Registry File jpgNOTjfif.reg

Right-click on it. Then Save as… and Double-click on the downloaded file. Accept all prompts.

Adding information warning … click Yes
Keys added successfully … click OK
Allow any other security prompts.

  1. Hi Terry. I prefer using Irfanview, but this is the first time hearing of XnView. If you have ever used both, maybe you can shed light on your preference, Mindblower!

I have both on my system. XnView is my choice. I don’t know if one is better than the other. But we are creatures of habit and you get used to things. 🙂

      1. Thank you, Terry. It is nice to have an alternative program. Nice fix and simple solution.

IrfanView claims the extension is wrong and offers to rename it. I did finally fix the issue with XnView, I just uninstalled XnView and then installed it again.
